My Husband's Mistress Didn't Know Whose Restaurant It Was
Ruby · Ongoing · 7.1k Words
Introduction
"I'm the owner's wife," she sneered, and called her husband to come deal with us.
The contact photo on her screen was Adrian. I knew, because I took it on our honeymoon.
Around her neck hung my mother's wedding ring—the one Mom took off after thirty-five years and fastened around my husband's neck the night the doctors said he'd never wake up.
One call to my father would have ended it. I didn't make it. I pulled the kids close and waited for my husband to walk through that door.
She thought he was coming to save her.
She had no idea who was coming after him.
Chapter 1
Vivian's POV
When I took my late brother's four kids to dinner at the restaurant my grandmother left me, and seven-year-old Leo asked for a refill of the bottomless garlic knots, I didn't expect the new manager to tell him to go eat out of a dumpster.

Tonight I'd brought all four. Leo, seven. Max, five, who wore a smartwatch my father had bought him "for emergencies" and a gold bracelet from my mother—Nonna, to the kids—that he refused to take off, even in the bath. And the twins, Ollie and Lily, four. My brother James's kids. Since we lost James and Claire two years ago, they've been my parents' kids, and mine.
We ordered baked ziti, chicken parm, meatballs, two kids' penne, and one basket of the famous garlic knots. The menu still said what it had said since 1975: Bottomless. Refills on the house.
I'd already paid—two hundred and twelve dollars, tip included—and we were waiting on a box of cannoli to take home to my mother. The kids, though, weren't done with the knots.
I also had a secret in my purse: a sonogram from that morning. Two little gray beans. Twins, nine weeks. Leo had spotted the printout at lunch, and Lily had gasped, "Two babies? Like me and Ollie?" All four of them had pinky-sworn to keep it quiet until I told Uncle Adrian tonight.
The basket ran empty. Our server was slammed, so Leo picked it up and carried it to the host stand himself.
I watched him go with my heart in my throat.
"Can we please have more garlic knots?"
The woman behind the stand looked down at him. Blond blowout, a blazer one size too small, a gold nametag pinned on crooked. Her eyes went from the basket to our table—five of us—and back.
"Are you kidding me?" Her voice cut across the dining room. "Five of you on one nine-dollar basket? Does this look like a soup kitchen? If you can't afford to eat, go dig through a dumpster. Don't come in here and make me sick."
Leo went white. The basket shook in his hands. At the nearest table, a woman set down her fork.
I was beside him in three strides, my hands on his shoulders.
"Excuse me. The menu says refills are free, and he asked politely. I'd like to speak to your manager."
She laughed and folded her arms.
"Honey, I'm the owner's wife. Sure, refills are free—for customers. Not for a whole litter on one order." She looked me up and down. "Popping them out like a sow when you can't even feed them. And now you're in here embarrassing yourself."
The owner's wife.
I almost laughed. If she was the owner's wife, then who exactly was I?
I reached for my phone. She beat me to hers.
She dialed, and I saw her screen before she lifted it to her ear. The contact photo was a man on a terrace above the sea, squinting into the sun.
Adrian. Positano. I knew, because I took that picture on our honeymoon.
"Babe?" Her voice went soft as butter. "Can you come down to the restaurant? There's this trashy woman making a scene. Come handle her for me. … Okay. Hurry. Love you."
She hung up and smiled at me like she'd already won.
"What, is their daddy dead?" she said, loud enough for the back booths. "So Mommy drags all four of them out to mooch? Have some self-respect."
Every head turned.
Their daddy was dead. Black ice on the Taconic, two years ago.
Lily grabbed a fistful of my sweater and started to cry. Ollie buried his face in my leg. Max's chin trembled. They thought they'd done something terrible.
"Then let's wait for your husband," I said. "He can tell you whether mine is dead."
Then the light caught something at her throat, and I stopped breathing.
On a thin chain hung a braided gold band, three strands twisted together. There was only one like it in the world. A jeweler on Grand Street had made it for my mother in 1986.
Five years ago, Adrian took a forty-foot fall climbing in the Gunks. While he lay in a coma, my mother took off the ring she'd never once removed, threaded it onto a chain, and fastened it around his neck.
"Until he wakes up," she told the nurses.
Ninety-nine nights later, he did. He cried in her arms and swore he'd never let this family down.
He'd worn it under his shirt every day since. Once, I asked to borrow it for Mom's birthday dinner. He said no—it was the only reason he was alive.
Now it hung around a stranger's neck.
"Are you deaf? Apologize to her!" A girl popped up at the woman's elbow—nineteen, maybe, with lash extensions and a smirk. "Don't stress, Aunt Chels. Wait till Adrian gets here. He'll deal with her."
Servers closed in around us. Not one face I knew. Danny, the Fordham kid who used to work the stand, was gone. Everyone was gone. And every new face had the same sharp chin, the same spray tan.
Family. She'd filled my restaurant with her family.
And I'd missed all of it. Since James died, I'd let Adrian run Marchetti's while I raised four grieving kids. He handled the hiring and the books; I signed whatever he put in front of me. I hadn't stood behind that host stand in two years, and I'd never been the type to announce whose name was on the deed.
"We should post her," one of the servers said. "Put her on TikTok so every restaurant in the city knows her face."
Near the bar, someone snickered. A couple by the window traded a look and went back to their wine.
"We paid!" Max stepped out from behind me, fists balled. "We paid for everything!"
"For one basket, sure." The woman sneered down at him. "Trash raises trash."
She turned, and her nametag swung straight.
CHELSEA LANE. FRONT OF HOUSE MANAGER.
Lane.
A month ago, a text had lit up Adrian's phone at 11:40 at night. The contact said Lane – Linens.
