Chapter 1
The wrought-iron gates groaned, parting slowly like the jaws of a massive steel beast. Our black town car crept up the long, sweeping driveway, the heavy tires crunching rhythmically over immaculate white gravel. Beside me, Mom squeezed my hand. Her fingers trembled, vibrating with a giddy, nervous energy that made my stomach churn.
"We're here, Mona," she whispered, her voice breathless. She leaned forward, her eyes wide as she stared out the tinted window. "Home."
I swallowed the dry lump lodged in my throat. The metallic taste of anxiety coated my tongue. This wasn't home. Home was the cramped two-bedroom apartment back in the city, where the radiator clanked all winter and the smell of the neighbor's fried food constantly seeped through the thin drywall.
This place was a fortress.
The estate loomed ahead at the peak of the hill, a colossal structure of sharp architectural angles, floor-to-ceiling tinted glass, and cold gray marble. It sat entirely isolated from the bustling city below, surrounded by acres of manicured, unnatural perfection. It looked untouchable. Forbidding. Exactly like the man who owned it.
Sebastian Rex Wolfe.
My new stepfather.
The car rolled to a smooth stop beneath a towering portico. Before my mother could even reach for the handle, a man in a crisp dark suit opened her door, offering a white-gloved hand. The thick, humid summer air of the city didn't seem to reach up here; the breeze that swept into the car was crisp, biting, and smelled faintly of pine and expensive car exhaust.
I grabbed my worn canvas tote bag from the floorboards, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the rough fabric. The strap bit into my shoulder as I slid out of the car on the opposite side, my worn-out combat boots hitting the pristine cobblestone with a heavy, out-of-place thud.
Mom was already on the steps, smoothing down the skirt of her pastel sundress. She looked beautiful, glowing with a soft, warm happiness I hadn't seen in the ten years since my biological father passed away. That happiness was a heavy weight on my chest. I couldn't ruin this for her. I had promised myself I would smile, keep my head down, and survive this completely alien world for her sake.
"Come on, sweetie," she called out, waving me over.
I hauled my bag up the wide stone steps. The massive double doors, carved from dark, heavy wood, stood wide open, waiting to swallow us whole.
Stepping across the threshold was like crossing into a different atmosphere. The air conditioning hit my skin instantly, raising goosebumps on my bare arms. The foyer was massive, the ceiling stretching up three stories to a sprawling crystal chandelier that caught the afternoon sun, casting sharp, blinding prisms across the floor. Everything was white, silver, and black. There were no photographs. No clutter. No signs of actual human life. It looked like a museum where you weren't allowed to breathe too loudly.
"Mrs. Wolfe."
A tall, severe-looking woman in a tailored black dress stepped forward from the shadows of the grand staircase. Her heels clicked sharply against the marble, echoing in the cavernous space.
"I am Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper," she said, her tone perfectly polite but entirely devoid of warmth. "Mr. Wolfe has instructed me to show you to the master suite so you may rest after your transition. Your luggage is already being unpacked."
Mom beamed, completely missing the housekeeper's stiff demeanor. "Oh, thank you, Mrs. Gable! That sounds wonderful. Mona, do you want to come see—"
"Miss Presley has her own quarters in the west wing," Mrs. Gable interrupted smoothly, her pale eyes sliding over my faded jeans and oversized band t-shirt. I felt a hot flush of embarrassment creep up my neck. "A maid will show her the way shortly."
"Go ahead, Mom," I forced a smile, adjusting the strap of my tote. "I'll be fine. I just want to look around a bit anyway."
Mom hesitated, but the allure of her new life won out. "Okay. I'll see you at dinner. Love you."
I watched her follow the housekeeper up the sweeping staircase, her soft laughter echoing against the cold stone walls until she disappeared down the upper corridor.
The silence that settled over the foyer was deafening.
The only sound was the slow, rhythmic ticking of a massive grandfather clock standing in the corner. It sounded like a countdown.
A young maid in a black-and-white uniform appeared near the back of the hall, but I held up a hand. "Just give me a minute, please. I'll find my own way."
She nodded quickly and vanished through a side door, leaving me completely alone.
I needed to move. Standing still in the center of that massive space made me feel entirely exposed, like a bug pinned under a magnifying glass. I picked a hallway to my right and started walking.
The air grew colder the deeper I went into the house. The walls here were paneled in dark, rich mahogany, absorbing the light rather than reflecting it. The floor shifted from marble to a thick, expensive runner rug that completely muffled my footsteps. Heavy, closed doors lined the corridor, each one locked up tight. I trailed my fingertips along the textured wallpaper, my chest tight with an unexplainable, creeping anxiety.

The Human Among Wolves
My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

I fell. My head cracked against the corner.
Warmth trickled down my neck. Blood.
