Introduction
She lands in Fell's Ridge, in the clubhouse of the Iron Vows MC, and in the orbit of its president.....Cage Malone, a man who's spent six years quietly at war with the very family she just fled, and three years guarding a wound he's never let anyone near.
What starts as shelter becomes something neither of them planned on. But the envelope in Wren's bag isn't just a threat to Aldous Crane....it's the key to a secret that reaches back further than either of them knows, tangled in the same past that broke Cage the first time he let himself love someone. As Crane closes in and old ghosts turn out not to be as gone as promised, Wren and Cage have to decide whether the thing between them is strong enough to survive a truth that could end them both.....and the club that's become the only home either of them has left.
Slow burn. High stakes. One devastating twist neither of them sees coming.
Chapter 1
WREN
The bar smelled like leather, gasoline, and trouble, and Wren Delacroix had chosen it on purpose.
Three days ago she'd been Wren Hale....future Mrs. Aldous Crane, daughter-in-law-elect to a man who owned half the zoning board in three counties. Tonight she was nobody, sitting on a barstool in a clubhouse two hundred miles from anywhere anyone would think to look, wearing a leather jacket she'd bought secondhand because it made her feel like armor.
She still had Aldous's ring in her pocket. She hadn't decided if that meant she wasn't really gone, or if it just meant she wasn't done being angry.
"You're new."
The voice came from behind her....low, unhurried, the kind of voice that didn't need volume because nobody in the room would think about interrupting it. Wren turned on the stool and found herself looking up at the reason the whole bar had gone a half-register quieter when he walked in twenty minutes ago.
He was tall enough that she had to tip her chin, dark hair pushed back like he hadn't thought about it in weeks, a scar through one eyebrow that should have made him look damaged and instead made him look like a question nobody had gotten to finish asking. The patch over his heart said PRESIDENT. The one under it said IRON VOWS MC.
"I'm visiting," Wren said, which was a lie with better manners than the truth.
"Nobody visits Fell's Ridge." He said it like a fact, not a challenge, and pulled out the stool beside her without asking. "You running from something, or running to it?"
"Does it matter which?"
Something moved behind his eyes...not quite a smile. "It matters to me which one gets in the way of club business."
"Cage." A woman's voice, sharp, from the end of the bar. "Church in five."
He didn't look away from Wren. "Name."
"Wren."
"Just Wren?"
"For now."
That got the almost-smile all the way to the surface. "Alright, Just Wren. You're gonna want to be gone by the time church lets out. Not because I'm asking." His eyes flicked, briefly, to the door, to the three men who'd come in behind him and hadn't sat down, hadn't stopped watching the room. "Because in about ten minutes this stops being a bar and starts being a business meeting, and the men walking through that door aren't going to care that you're pretty."
"I can take care of myself."
"Everybody says that right up until they can't."
He stood, and for a second the easy weight of him made the whole room feel smaller. "But I'll tell you what. You're still sitting on that stool in ten minutes, I'll buy you a drink after and you can tell me what a girl who talks like private school and dresses like she robbed a thrift store is doing in my clubhouse."
He was gone before she could answer, swallowed into a back hallway with the men who'd been watching the door....and one of them, the biggest one, held her gaze a half second longer than felt like coincidence.
Wren looked down at the ring in her pocket, the outline of it through the leather.
She didn't leave.
CAGE
Church was supposed to be about the shipment. It became, in the first ninety seconds, about the girl.
"She's Crane's," said Tiny, who was not tiny, dropping a photograph on the table like it was evidence in a trial nobody wanted to have. "Aldous Crane's daughter-in-law. Was going to be, anyway.....word is she ran three days ago, night before the wedding."
Cage looked at the photograph. Looked at the woman he'd just left at the bar, who did not, in the photo, look like someone capable of running from anything. She looked like someone's careful, curated daughter, hair done, dress pressed, standing next to a man whose smile didn't reach anywhere near his eyes.
"Crane the developer," Cage said. "Or Crane the other thing."
"Same Crane. And the other thing is the part that matters, because the other thing is who's been buying up the warehouses on Route 9. The same warehouses we've been running our own business out of for six years."
That was the part of the night Cage hadn't been ready for. The shipment problem, he could solve. Rerouted trucks, a new drop, money changing hands to smooth over a schedule slip....that was Tuesday. But a woman sitting on a barstool in his clubhouse with a runaway bride's face and a dead man's ring-shaped bulge in her jacket pocket, connected by blood-by-marriage to the man his club had spent six years successfully avoiding....
That was not Tuesday. That was the kind of complication that ended clubs.
"She know who we are?" asked Ruth, the only person at that table Cage trusted without qualification, and had since they were nineteen and she'd patched him up after his first bad night in this life. "Know what Crane's connected to?"
"She didn't act like it." Cage set the photo down. "She acted like a woman who doesn't know yet that the fire she jumped into is the same one she jumped out of."
"That's not our problem," said Tiny.
Cage thought about the way she'd looked at him....not scared, which surprised him, and not impressed either, which surprised him more. Like she was deciding something about him in real time and hadn't landed on an answer yet.
He thought about six years of keeping this club two steps ahead of men like Aldous Crane, and the particular, specific kind of trouble that walked in wearing a stranger's leather jacket and sat down like she belonged there.
"Not yet," Cage said. "But she will be."
He didn't know, standing up from that table, whether he meant it as a warning to the room or a promise to himself. He only knew that when church let out eleven minutes later, he went looking for a barstool with a woman still sitting on it, and felt something loosen in his chest, stupidly, when he found her still there.
"You stayed," he said.
"You said you'd buy me a drink."
"I did." He sat. Signaled the bartender. Didn't take his eyes off her. "I also lied a little, back there. About it just being business tonight."
"What was the truth?"
Cage looked at her a long moment .at the ring-shaped shadow in her pocket she didn't know he'd clocked, at the careful way she held herself like someone still deciding if she was allowed to take up space.
"Truth is," he said, "I don't yet know what you are to this club. Might be nothing. Might be the thing that burns it down." He took the drink the bartender set down and pushed it toward her.
"Either way. Welcome to Fell's Ridge, Just Wren."
