Chapter 1
Evan Hart sat on the couch, watching his family scurry around frantically. His grandfather bustled about making calls, putting on a friendly voice for whoever answered, but when he got an answer he didn't want, his expression turned sour. His father stood by the window, calling one person and then the next. His mother, though, was the most dramatic of them all, as she did nothing but cry.
His eyes gleamed with mockery as he watched them. Unbelievable that they should be so worried about his older brother, Jesse, who, as they all feared, had been kidnapped, but was actually found to have run away with some guy. But Evan wasn't about to tell them that; they would never believe him.
They always favored Jesse and treated him like he was fragile and sweet, because as a child he had been sickly. In reality, Jesse's frailty was his own fault, since he avoided any type of exercise whatsoever. As Evan grew older, he realized that the reason Jesse resented him was simply because he existed, not for anything he had done. Jesse had despised the idea of sharing the love and attention of the family and would often feign illnesses.
When Evan was much younger, he yearned for the approval of his family and tried very hard to gain their affection. The disappointments had toughened him over time, and now he expected nothing from them. So long as they kept paying such basic needs as tuition, allowance, and a place to stay, he simply didn't care anymore. At least they'd never denied him that.
Evan was a final-year student in the country's best university, studying medicine, but his parents never liked this decision as they wanted him to take up music like Jesse, the award-winning violinist who made many acknowledge the family for good things. Unlike Jesse, his talented brother, Evan was seen as the odd one out.
Evan, don't you know where your brother is?" his mother asked, her voice shaking. "You just sit there while all of us are worried to death!
A slight smirk curled Evan's lips. "Mom, I've told you a thousand times. I have no idea where your precious son is," he said coldly. Long ago, he stopped caring about their feelings; his heart held no love for his family, just indifference. And the only person he ever cared for was someone he couldn't have: Nathan Collins-who just happened to be Jesse's boyfriend.
Funny, huh? Evan was in love with his brother's boyfriend. Sometimes he thought he was just so cursed that he was to live his life in Jesse's shadow. But he had learned to deal with it. After he graduated and started working, he intended to cut ties with his family once and for all. That was why he'd been saving all his money-to open his own private clinic and finally be free.
His mother let out a heavy sigh. "Why are you being so cold? I was just asking because you two brothers, and he might have told you something."
Evan snorted. "Brothers? We are more like strangers," he said while getting up to leave. "If you don't believe me, fine. I'm going to class."
"Where are you going? How can you be so uncaring while your brother might have been kidnapped?" his grandfather's stern voice rang out.
His fists were clenched hard to keep himself cool, he whirred around, placed a forced smile on his face, and said, "Kidnapped? Let's not kid ourselves, Grandpa. I'm going off to class. You can keep looking for Jesse," before walking just out, ignoring the shouting behind his back.
Even as he stepped outside, his grandfather's angry voice still echoed, "Look at the kind of son you've raised! It's no wonder, being brought up by an uneducated nanny!"
The words didn't bother Evan. True enough, he had been brought up by a nanny, but she was the only one who ever looked after him. She taught him how to walk, how to speak, and even the use of chopsticks. She had retired years back, but Evan would still visit her during holidays. She was childless and thus he treated her like his grandmother. He wanted to succeed so that he could change her old house and give her a good life.
As Evan waited at the bus stop, Nathan crept into his mind. For years now, he had secretly been in love with him. Nathan was a hugely successful businessman, the CEO of a major medical company, and one of the most eligible bachelors around at 27 years old. Evan had first met him when he was just a kid. On a camping trip, Evan had saved a teenage Nathan from drowning. When he came back with help, Nathan was already gone. For years, Evan had thought about that boy and held onto the memory.
Imagine the heartbreak Evan had felt years later when Nathan showed up at his house and was introduced as Jesse's boyfriend. All the pain had remained inside him all these years, a reminder that he would never have been able to be with the one person he wanted.
Today, for some reason, Evan felt this urge to see Nathan. He called up a cab to take him to his apartment and enquired about whether the latter was fine. After an hour, he reached Nathan's place. It wasn't his first time; they became good friends as Nathan saw Evan as his younger brother. They did share interests in medicine, as Nathan's company dealt with pharmaceuticals and herbal products.
He punched in the access code for the apartment-Jesse's birthday, a painful reminder of his unreturned love-entered the place, and was greeted by darkness. He flicked the lights on and was taken aback by what he saw: bottles of liquor and clothes lay strewn all over the floor. Nathan would never have allowed his place to get so messy.
Where is he?" Evan mumbled to himself as his chest started to tighten with concern. He started searching the rooms until, finally, a loud crash came from the bar area.
Evan quickly went over to him and found Nathan slumped on the floor, surrounded by broken glass, his hand bleeding from a fresh cut. Evan's heart skipped a beat.
"Nathan, what are you doing?" he yelled, hurrying to his side.

The moment the screen lit up, my entire world came crashing down.
The woman on the bed was Calista - that girl who grew up with us since we were kids. And that hand caressing her skin was wearing the wedding ring I had personally put on Matteo's finger.
"I've missed you so much..."
"You drive me crazy, baby..."

He Never Loved Me, Until I Left
I put away the divorce agreement with a wry smile.
When he and my son completely disappeared, he finally panicked.
Three months later .
He knelt down on the streets of Chicago in despair, begging me to remarry him.
My six-year-old son looked coldly at his biological father and said, "Get lost, you bad uncle! You don't deserve to be my dad!"
He Thought I'd Never Leave
When he said he was being bullied, I believed him. When he kissed me on that rooftop, I thought he felt the same. When he asked me to transfer schools with him, I said yes without hesitation.
Then I heard him bragging to his friends: "She'd save her first time for me. Hell, she'd still be thinking of me on her wedding night."
The bullying was staged. The kiss meant nothing. He just wanted me gone—so his new girl could feel more comfortable.
He thought I'd beg. He thought I'd cry. He thought I'd never actually leave.
I left the country.
And ran straight into his stepbrother.
I Died While They Threw Her a Party
Their real daughter came home. She'd only been back two years. That's all it took to erase twenty-four.
When kidnappers grabbed us, I used my body as a shield. They beat me until something inside me ruptured. I was dying from internal bleeding, but no one could tell.
My parents wouldn't even look at me. "This is your fault! None of this would've happened if it weren't for you!"
"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."
They threw her a party at a downtown hotel while I died alone in my room.
I thought they'd be relieved. Maybe even glad. I thought they'd just move on like I never existed.
But when they finally learned the truth, they fell apart.
Bury Me in His Regret
The kidnapper pressed the gun to my temple and asked, "Choose your wife or your sister-in-law?"
Zachary didn't hesitate. "Let Valerie go," he said.
He actually chose to save his sister-in-law! In that moment, even the baby in my belly seemed to stop kicking.
Later, they locked me in the basement. Drugs to delay labor were pumped into my veins over and over. Zachary wanted to save the "firstborn son" status for his sister-in-law's child.
When warm blood finally soaked through my skirt, I dialed the number I knew by heart with shaking hands.
"Zachary," I whispered into the phone, "our child... can't wait any longer."
The Kidney That Killed Me
A few months ago, my sister was hospitalized with kidney failure. The doctor said she needed a transplant. My family's first thought was me—the backup daughter they'd kept around all these years.
When my husband Allen took my hand with tears in his eyes and said, "Only you can save her," I agreed without hesitation.
When the doctor explained the surgical risks and potential complications, I smiled and nodded my understanding.
My parents said I'd finally learned what sisterly love meant.
Even Allen, who'd always been cold to me, held my hand gently and said, "The surgery's safe. You're so healthy, nothing will go wrong. When you recover, I'll take you to Hawaii."
But they don't know that no matter how the surgery goes, I won't be around to celebrate.
Because I just got my own test results—I have terminal brain cancer. I'm going to die anyway.
After the Affair: Falling into a Billionaire's Arms
From first crush to wedding vows, George Capulet and I had been inseparable. But in our seventh year of marriage, he began an affair with his secretary.
On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

The Human Among Wolves
My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.

“I thought you said you were done chasing me?” Gen mocked.
“I am done chasing you.”
Before she could formulate a witty remark, Matteo threw her down. She landed hard on her back atop his dining room table. She tried to sit up when she noticed what he was doing. His hands were working on his belt. It came free of his pants with a violent yank. She collapsed back on her elbows, her mouth gaping open at the display. His face was a mask of sheer determination, his eyes were a dark gold swimming with heat and desire. His hands wrapped around her thighs and pulled her to the edge of the table. He glided his fingers up her thighs and hooked several around the inside of her panties. His knuckles brushed her dripping sex.
“You’re soaking wet, Genevieve. Tell me, was it me that made you this way or him?” his voice told her to be careful with her answer. His knuckles slid down through her folds and she threw her head back as she moaned. “Weakness?”
“You…” she breathed.
