The Billionaire’s Wife Is Done Waiting
LadyGuGu · Ongoing · 60.5k Words
Introduction
Her husband, billionaire CEO Ethan Caldwell, is already at the hospital—with Nora’s half-sister by his side. And while Nora waits for someone to remember her birthday, she watches the three people she once called family celebrate without her.
That night, Nora stops waiting.
She leaves her wedding ring behind, resigns from her husband’s company, and returns to Asterion Labs—the AI company she founded before marriage and abandoned for a family that erased her one sacrifice at a time.
But six years is long enough for the world to forget a genius.
To save Asterion from bankruptcy, Nora must repair a failing medical AI model, survive a lawsuit from her husband’s company, and convince the most powerful investor at the Frontier Summit that she is still worth betting on.
Julian Cross remembers her.
Six years ago, Nora humiliated him by rejecting his offer to buy Asterion. Now he controls the funding and computing power she desperately needs. He believes in her talent—but not in the woman who once walked away from everything she built.
Nora can debug a broken model in thirty hours.
Proving that she will never disappear again may take much longer.
And just as Ethan begins to realize that the quiet wife he neglected was the brilliant woman everyone else is fighting to claim, Julian presents Nora with a far more dangerous proposition:
He will invest in her company—but only if she gives him a reason to invest in her.
This time, Nora isn’t asking anyone to choose her.
She is choosing herself.
Chapter 1
Nora's POV
The hospital called at 1:12 a.m.
Three hours and fourteen minutes earlier, the ski school had called Serena.
“Am I speaking to Sophia Caldwell’s mother?”
“Yes.” I was already sitting up. “What happened?”
The woman went through the report. A fall on the lower slope at 9:58. Transport at 10:26. A buckle fracture in the left wrist. Six stitches above the right eyebrow. A concussion that meant keeping her under observation until noon.
“Is she awake?”
“She’s resting.”
“Can I speak to her?”
A pause. Then, “Let me check with her care team.”
I stayed on the line.
By the time I reached the fourth floor at 4:47, her wrist had been splinted, the cut stitched, the decisions made.
The woman at patient access wore a name tag that read DOLORES. She checked her screen, glanced at me, then checked it again.
“Your relationship to the patient?”
“Mother.”
She typed for a few seconds. Stopped. Tried something else.
I gripped the edge of the counter.
“Is there a problem?”
“I’ll need you to look over this.”
She slid a clipboard toward me.
Father: Ethan Caldwell. His mobile number, his office, his assistant’s direct line.
Guardian Two: Serena Bennett. Two phone numbers.
Mother: __________
I went back to the top and read it again.
“Who filled this out?”
“The winter program submits the form. We verify it at intake.”
“When was this information confirmed?”
“November.”
The elevator opened at 5:02. Ethan stepped out with his coat buttoned and his phone against his ear. He saw me, lifted one finger, and finished his call.
“Send it to Marcus.”
Then he put the phone down.
“She’s asleep. They want to keep her until noon.”
I held out the clipboard.
He glanced at it.
“My name isn’t on there.”
“It’s the program form.”
“The hospital called me after one. They called Serena before ten.”
“You were in New York in November.”
“I was still her mother.”
His eyes flicked toward Dolores.
“Why is Serena on it, Ethan?”
He set his coffee on the counter and pressed down a loose edge of the lid.
“She was in Aspen. She runs the winter events, she knows the school, and she could get to the mountain in ten minutes. It was practical.”
I waited for him to look at the empty line again.
He didn’t.
“The desk is open,” I said. “We can fix it now.”
“Fix it in the morning.”
“It’s five in the morning.”
Dolores moved her mouse, then angled the screen toward me.
“I can amend the contact information now. We can keep the existing contact, replace it, or list you both at the same priority.”
“Both,” I said. “Equal.”
I wanted my name on the form. I wasn’t going to make Sophie wait longer for help to prove a point.
Dolores nodded. “Would you like a copy of the change history?”
“Yes. Keep the original submission, too.”
“It stays in the record.”
The printer started beneath the desk. Ethan picked up his coffee.
Dolores handed me two pages. On the second, she pointed to the confirmation entry.
November 14. 3:02 p.m.
Guardian information reviewed and confirmed.
E. Caldwell.
His initials appeared twice. Once beside his own information.
Once beside the empty mother field.
I knew that signature. I had seen it on school forms, delivery slips, birthday cards someone else had bought for him.
He had reached that line and signed.
I folded the page carefully, matching the corners, and put it in my coat pocket.
“Are we done?” he asked.
“For now.”
Room 412 was dim. A blue plastic basin sat on the tray beside the bed.
Sophie lay propped against the pillows, her left wrist in a splint. The tape above her eyebrow pulled at the skin when she looked up. I stopped just inside the door.
All the way there, I had needed to see her.
Now I could see exactly where she’d been hurt.
Serena sat beside her pillow, shoes off, feet tucked beneath her. One hand rested on the blanket within Sophie’s reach.
“Oh, Nora.” She straightened. “She’s been awake about twenty minutes. She wanted ice chips, but I told her we had to wait for the doctor. She’s been trying to talk me into it.”
“Aunt Serena stayed the whole time,” Sophie said.
“I know, sweetheart.”
I moved closer.
“I’m here now.”
Sophie looked at me, then past me toward the door. Her fingers closed around Serena’s sleeve.
“You said you wouldn’t leave.”
“I’m not leaving,” Serena told her.
There was a pitcher on the tray. I poured a little water into a cup.
“The nurse said you could have small sips.”
I held it where Sophie could reach it with her good hand.
She pulled Serena’s sleeve against her chest.
“I don’t want Mom. I want Aunt Serena to do it.”
My hand stayed out for another second.
Sophie was six. She was hurt and frightened, and she wanted the person who’d been there when it happened.
I knew all of that.
I still had to look down before I could put the cup back.
The rim caught the tray with a small, hard click.
Serena reached for it.
“Here you go, sweetheart.”
Sophie lifted her chin and drank.
I stood beside the bed with nothing in my hands.
“She’s scared,” Serena said quietly. “She’s been awake since two. They had to use a needle. She doesn’t mean it, Nora.”
I looked at the tape above my daughter’s eye.
“She’ll feel better by breakfast,” Serena added, smoothing the blanket. “Won’t you, sweetheart?”
I wanted to kiss the uninjured side of Sophie’s forehead. I couldn’t work out how to lean close without making her hold Serena tighter.
“I’m going to speak to the nurse.”
Neither of them asked me to stay.
The night nurse’s name was Angela.
I asked her to go through the instructions again. The checks, the sleep, the nausea. What to watch for. When to call.
She explained it without rushing me.
I kept my eyes on her face and repeated the parts I needed to remember.
“And you record each check?”
“Yes. Everything goes in her chart.”
“When’s the next one?”
“Seven thirty.”
“Thank you.”
Ethan was waiting in the corridor, his coat still on. He was scrolling through his phone.
“The dinner’s off,” he said.
I stopped.
“I’ll take you both somewhere after she’s discharged. Or we can do it at home next week.”
“It’s my birthday.”
He looked up.
“I know what day it is.”
I had nothing ready to say to that. For a moment, I wished I hadn’t reminded him.
He put his phone in his pocket.
“Go back to the hotel. Get some sleep. There’s nothing you can do here until the doctor comes around at seven.”
“Seven thirty,” I said.
Then I went back into the room.
Serena had fallen asleep against the pillow behind her chair. Sophie’s eyes were closed, her good hand still caught in the cuff of Serena’s sweater.
I brought the spare chair over from the corner. There wasn’t room beside the pillow, so I set it at the foot of the bed.
My coat caught beneath me when I sat down. I left it there.
From this end, I could see the faint bruising below Sophie’s eyebrow. Every few breaths, her fingers tightened on Serena’s sleeve.
I watched until they loosened again.
The folded form pressed against my ribs. I eased it out of my pocket so the paper wouldn’t rustle if Sophie woke.
My name was in the record now. At seven thirty, I would be here for the nurse’s questions.
I laid the pages across my knees and waited for my daughter to wake.
I didn’t know whether I could bear to hear her ask me to leave.

But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.
Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.
Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.
Do you really know your husband?
From that day on, my life filled with shadows.
I suspected my husband of having an affair.
When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.
I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.
My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."
The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"
I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.
But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.
Does Lucas truly love me?

He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.
And in his world? Love will get you killed.

Inked Adonis - Mafia Romance
Of me saying I want to climb him like a tree.
And he just. Texted. Back.
It's the dog's fault, really.
If this untrained Great Dane I'm walking had any manners at all, I never would've ended up here:
With my leash wrapped around the most gorgeous man I've ever seen.
Lucky for me, the guy is a good sport about it.
(Although his joke that “Dogs take after their owners” hits a little too close to home when Rufus starts humping his leg.)
He leaves me with his business card and a smile that makes my knees weak.
I'm still pinching myself as me and the bestie resume our walk.
“Methinks you had a little crush on him,” she accuses.
Not thinking and a little flustered by the whole experience, I reply, “I’d wrap my legs around his waist tighter than that leash.”
THAT'S when she reveals that she'd been recording my response.
THAT'S when she gives me the most devilish grin I've ever seen and says, “You're welcome.”
And THAT'S when she hands me my phone and reveals...
She sent the recording to him.
My heart is in my throat as those three little dots appear…
Then a text.
“PROVE IT.”
