Introduction

Elena was raised as an ordinary human until the night she was sacrificed as a treaty bride to the feared Alpha King of Moonfang. Branded as cursed and hated by an entire kingdom, she soon discovers that the strange mark on her wrist is no curse... it is proof that she is the last surviving heir of the legendary Moon Queen, whose royal bloodline was believed to have been erased centuries ago.

As forgotten memories awaken and ancient relics begin calling to her, Elena and Alpha King Kael are drawn into a deadly race against the Blood Hunters, an order hiding a terrifying secret. Powerful enemies hunt the Seven Royal Relics, believing they will grant unimaginable power, but the relics are actually the locks imprisoning an ancient darkness that once nearly destroyed the world.

With kingdoms divided by betrayal, guardians returning from legend, and history itself built on lies, Elena must decide whether to reclaim the throne stolen from her family or sacrifice everything to stop an evil older than time from rising again.

Chapter 1

"Princess...wake up."

Nessa had never called me Princess when we were alone. Not once, not in eighteen years. She did today, and that was how I knew before she said another word that something in my life had already ended.

"The war is over."

My heart leaped so fast it hurt. Three years of casualty lists. Three years of boys coming home missing pieces of themselves. Finally…

Then five more words came out of her, and her voice broke on every one of them.

"Your father already signed it."

"Signed what?"

She wouldn't answer. She just pulled the robe off the chair and held it out with both hands shaking, and that told me more than she ever could have said out loud.

I didn't dress properly. I threw the robe over my nightgown and followed her down the east corridor, past guards who wouldn't look at me, past maids who stopped sweeping and then quickly looked away too. The whole house had gone silent. Even the dogs in the courtyard weren't barking.

My father stood at the head of the council table when I walked in. A treaty lay before him. The wax seal was broken. His signature was already dry. I hadn't even known there was a decision being made, and it had already been made without me.

Three advisors sat around him. Not one of them lifted their eyes to meet mine.

"Father...what is that?"

"Sit down, Elena."

"I'd rather stand. What is that paper?"

His hands were shaking. I noticed that before I noticed anything else, before the words even started coming out of him. My father's hands never shook. Not during the worst of the war, not when the casualty lists tripled in a single season. They were shaking now.

"The war council met with the Moonfang envoy last night," he said. "We've agreed to peace terms."

Relief hit me first, stupid and fast, before the rest of the sentence caught up to me. "That's good. Isn't it?"

"There are conditions."

"There are always conditions."

"The Alpha King has agreed to end the war on one condition. He takes a human bride."

The room went very still.

"Congratulations to whoever she is," I said, though my voice had already started to thin.

"It's you."

I laughed, because it was easier than the alternative. "That isn't funny, Father."

"I'm not laughing."

"I'm your daughter." My voice came out sharper than I meant it to. "Not a line of ink on a peace agreement."

"You are the only unmarried daughter of a chancellor left in this kingdom. The Alpha King asked for royal blood."

"Why royal blood specifically? What does that even mean to him?"

One of the advisors, a younger one I didn't know by name, opened his mouth. "Because she…"

"Enough." Lord Pemberton cut him off so fast it was almost a flinch. The young advisor closed his mouth and stared at the table like it had personally betrayed him.

Nobody explained. I filed it away anyway, because I understood already that it mattered, even if I didn't yet know how.

"Did you even hesitate," I asked my father, "before you signed that?"

Silence.

"Did you fight for me? Even once?"

He looked away. Then he found his voice again, and when it came out, it wasn't an apology. It was something closer to a confession.

"History will remember me as the man who ended the war." His voice broke clean in half on the next sentence. "You'll remember me as the man who sold his daughter."

I had no answer for that. I'm not sure one exists.

"I never wanted this," he added, quieter.

"No." I looked at the broken seal on the table between us. "You only signed it."

Lord Pemberton cleared his throat like he thought that would help. "Princess, thousands of soldiers are alive tonight because of this agreement."

"I haven't given anything. You gave it. While I was asleep."

"Elena…"

"Don't." I turned back to my father. "You didn't wake me to ask. You woke me to tell me. There's a difference."

He didn't argue. That was somehow worse than if he had.

"If I refuse, does the war start again by morning?"

"The treaty is already signed. There is no refusing."

"Then why bring me down here at all? Why not send the trunks and let me find out on the road?"

"Because you deserved to hear it from me. Not from a letter."

"How generous," I said, and the words tasted like ash even as I said them.

I thought of the boy from Millbrook who used to deliver our bread, the one who came home with one arm and eyes that didn't focus on anything anymore. That was the only reason I didn't stand up and walk out of the room.

"Fine," I said. "I'll go."

My voice cracked in the middle of it, and I hated that it did.

"But I want it on record. You signed away the war, Father. Then you signed away me."

Lord Pemberton wouldn't meet my eyes this time either. "It's recorded, Princess."

Small comfort. It was the only one anyone offered me that night.

Three days later my trunks were loaded, and I stood at the door of a carriage that would carry me into a kingdom that already hated everything I was.

The driver had grown up near the border, close enough to Moonfang land to know things the rest of us only whispered about. I heard him talking low to one of the guards while they loaded my trunks.

"The Alpha King has never lost a battle."

"He executed his own uncle for treason," the guard answered. "With his own hands, they say."

"They say he's never bowed his head to anyone in his life. Not once. Except the Moon Goddess."

I noticed the guard's palms as he checked the wheels before we left. He was smearing something dark and bitter-smelling into the wood of the axle, working it in with his thumbs like it mattered more than anything else he'd done that morning. When I asked what it was, he wouldn't answer. Nessa told me later, once we were moving, that it was wolfsbane oil. Nobody had told her why either.

My father held my face in both his hands before the door shut. His hands were still shaking. "You are stronger than you know, Elena."

"You keep saying that like it will make this easier."

"It won't. But it's still true."

I didn't cry. I promised myself I wouldn't, not in front of the guards, not in front of the men who had decided my future around a table I hadn't been invited to sit at until it was already too late. The door shut. The horses started walking.

We rode for two days. On the second afternoon the trees changed, the ordinary oak and birch of my father's land giving way to something older and darker. Then, without warning, every horse in the convoy stopped.

Not one soldier gave the order. They simply refused to take another step, ears flat, nostrils working at something none of the rest of us could smell yet. One of the mares tried to turn back the way we'd come, and it took two guards to hold her steady. It took the driver nearly a full minute to coax the rest of them forward again.

"They know before we do," he muttered, more to himself than to me. "Always do. Long before we ever catch up."

We crested a low hill minutes later, and I saw them.

Thousands of golden eyes, staring back at me through the dusk.

No cheers. No welcome. Not one sound.

Then one wolf bared its fangs.

Another followed, and another, until the silence broke into something worse, a low rolling growl rising out of the ground itself, thousands of wolves baring their teeth at the human chosen to become their queen. I felt it before I heard it, a vibration that traveled up through the carriage floor and into my bones.

"Don't make eye contact," my driver whispered.

I didn't. I kept my eyes fixed straight ahead, my heart slamming against my ribs, and that was when the growling simply stopped.

All at once. Every wolf's head lowered. The entire forest seemed to hold its breath, and the air itself changed, pine and rain and something wild underneath it that I couldn't put a name to.

Then I understood why.

A man in black stood at the top of the stone steps, utterly still, looking down at the road as if he had been standing there for a hundred years waiting for exactly this moment.

I didn't know his face. I had never seen so much as a portrait of him.

But somehow, before anyone said a single word, I already knew.

The man who had ended the war.

The man who had never once asked for my heart. Only my name.

One Night. One Mistake. One Lifetime of Consequences.

I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.

Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”

There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
