Introduction
Now he’s her billionaire boss — and he swears he’s not the man she remembers.
Maya Lawson calls him Sebastian
He insists his name is Luca
She doesn’t believe him. He doesn’t care if she does.
But the longer she works under his intense gaze in the sleek Manhattan offices of Hale Empire, the more cracks appear in the story she’s told herself for years. The man she’s hated — the one who made her feel like a paid transaction — seems… different. Quieter. Sharper. Far more dangerous to her carefully guarded heart.
As forced proximity and explosive workplace rivalry pull them closer, long-buried truths begin to surface: identical twins, a night neither fully remembers, and a dead brother’s secrets that could destroy them both.
One of them is right.
One of them is about to lose everything.
And falling for the wrong twin might be the only way to finally uncover the truth.
Chapter 1
MAYA'S POV
I froze in the middle of the grand Hale Empire lobby like someone had poured ice water on me.
The morning rush swirled around me, sharp clicks of expensive heels on polished marble, the low hum of the air conditioner, the faint scent of fresh coffee and designer cologne hanging in the air. Manhattan’s elite moved with purpose, but my world narrowed to one man standing near the private executive elevators.
6'3". Broad shoulders filling out a tailored black suit that probably cost more than my entire Brooklyn apartment. Light skin glowing under the lighting. That same commanding posture I had memorized against my will four years ago.
Sebastian.
My stomach twisted Four years of carefully locked-away memories slammed into me at once, the luxurious hotel suite, his hands on my body like I was something precious for one night, the way his eyes had darkened with something that felt dangerously close to real. Then morning. I woke to cold sheets. An envelope with five thousand dollars tucked neatly beneath my pillow. No note. No goodbye. Just the quiet, brutal proof that I had been nothing more than a convenient transaction.
I had never loved him. I had liked the golden boy's attention, the brief illusion of being chosen by someone who moved through the world like it owed him everything. But that money… that money had carved a wound deeper than any heartbreak. It told me exactly how he saw me: disposable. Worth a price tag, but not a single word of explanation.
My hands clenched at my sides. I had spent three weeks at Hale Empire being deliberately invisible and composed, the quiet strategy consultant who let her supervisor take credit for her ideas because invisible people survived longer. I had rules. Never think about that night. Never say his name. Never let anyone see the scar.
Yet here I was, stepping forward before my brain could stop my feet.
“Sebastian.”
My voice rang out clearer and sharper than I intended, slicing through the lobby noise. Several heads turned. A few executives paused mid-conversation. I didn’t care. The anger I had buried for four years surged hot in my chest.
He turned slowly, gray eyes locking onto mine with cool, unreadable curiosity. No flash of guilt. No flicker of recognition. Just… interest. Like I was an unexpected variable in one of his perfect spreadsheets.
A faint frown creased his brow. “My name is Luca Hale,” he said, voice deep and controlled, carrying the kind of authority that made people straighten their spines. “And you are?”
The floor seemed to tilt beneath my heels.
Liar.
The word burned on my tongue, but I swallowed it. Or maybe I was the one losing my mind. The face was identical. Same sharp jaw, same intense gaze, same height and build that had once made me feel small and chosen at the same time. But the energy felt… off. Colder. More restrained. Sebastian had been charming, effortless, the golden heir who collected warmth wherever he went. This man looked like he measured every word and every glance.
I lifted my chin, refusing to shrink even an inch. “Maya Lawson. Strategy consultant. I’ve been working here for three weeks.”
He studied me for a long moment, those gray eyes tracing my face as if committing details to memory. Something shifted in his expression, a spark of intrigue that sent an unwelcome shiver down my spine. Not the playful heat I remembered from that night. This felt heavier. More dangerous.
“Miss Lawson,” he repeated, tasting my name like it was new information. “I’ll remember that.”
No apology. No explanation. He simply gave a small, curt nod and stepped into the waiting private elevator. The doors shut behind him, sealing him away like the conversation had been nothing more than a minor interruption.
My legs felt unsteady as I turned and headed straight for the nearest restroom on the ground floor. I locked myself in the farthest stall, pressing my forehead against the cool metal door while my pulse thundered in my ears.
Breathe, Maya. You’re not that girl anymore.
But the memories wouldn’t stop.
That hotel room four years ago had smelled of expensive sheets and his cologne. He had been attentive, almost tender in the way he touched me, like he saw something in me worth lingering over. I had let myself believe — just for a few hours — that someone like him could choose someone like me. A girl who grew up poor, learning early that survival meant staying sharp and staying small.
Then dawn came. The envelope. The silence.
I had stared at those crisp bills for a long time before pocketing them. Not because I wanted the money, but because refusing it would have meant admitting how deeply it hurt. That night had never been about love for me. It had been about feeling seen. Chosen. For once.
He had decided I was worth exactly five thousand dollars and nothing more.
I closed my eyes, whispering the truth I had never let myself say out loud to anyone, not even Clara.
“I wasn’t even worth a goodbye.”
The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. I forced my breathing to steady, smoothed my pencil skirt, and checked my reflection in the small mirror above the sink. Composed expression. The invisible survivor mask slid back into place.
No one here knew my history. No one needed to. I had clawed my way into this consultancy role through sheer intellect and late nights no one saw. This job was my chance to prove my worth wasn’t defined by one careless night with a man who never looked back.
Yet as I stepped out of the restroom and headed toward the main elevators, my phone vibrated in my hand.
A message from HR.
Urgent: Luca Hale, CEO, has personally requested your full employment file. Please make yourself available if Executive Support reaches out. Claire Benson will be your point of contact.
My thumb hovered over the screen. The CEO. Not some mid-level executive. The man whose name was on the building.
He had looked at me like he had never seen me before. Like my anger was a mystery instead of a memory.
Or he was lying.
The elevator doors opened on my floor. I stepped out, shoulders squared, but my mind raced. Why request my file the same morning I confronted him in the lobby? What game was he playing?
I reached my desk, a modest cubicle in the strategy department and sat down, forcing my hands to stop trembling as I opened my laptop. My supervisor, Mr. Hargrove, was already in a meeting across the room, probably preparing to present my latest Kane merger analysis as his own brilliant idea again.
I stayed invisible on purpose. It was safer.
But something told me that after today, invisibility was no longer an option.
By the time lunch hour approached, the rumors had already started circulating in quiet whispers near the coffee station. The new CEO, the one who had taken over after his brother’s tragic death two years ago and somehow turned a failing company into a powerhouse had noticed me.
Me. The quiet consultant from Brooklyn who kept her head down.
I told myself it didn’t matter. I would treat him with cool professionalism. Call him Mr. Hale. Pretend the lobby never happened. Pretend the hotel night belonged to someone else’s life.
But deep down, a dangerous little voice whispered:
What if he really doesn't care about you?
I pushed the thought away and opened the Kane files, determined to bury myself in work.
It didn’t help.
Because when I looked up an hour later, Claire Benson, the sharp, efficient executive PA was walking straight toward my desk with a professional smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Miss Lawson? Mr. Hale would like to see you in his office at four o’clock.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
The game had already begun.
And I had no idea if I was facing the man who broke me… or someone entirely different.

I grabbed her arm. “Put the spatula down.”

Before she could formulate a witty remark, Matteo threw her down. She landed hard on her back atop his dining room table. She tried to sit up when she noticed what he was doing. His hands were working on his belt. It came free of his pants with a violent yank. She collapsed back on her elbows, her mouth gaping open at the display. His face was a mask of sheer determination, his eyes were a dark gold swimming with heat and desire. His hands wrapped around her thighs and pulled her to the edge of the table. He glided his fingers up her thighs and hooked several around the inside of her panties. His knuckles brushed her dripping sex.
“You’re soaking wet, Genevieve. Tell me, was it me that made you this way or him?” his voice told her to be careful with her answer. His knuckles slid down through her folds and she threw her head back as she moaned. “Weakness?”
