The Freeloader Who Owned the Ground Beneath Their Tower

Introduction
Chapter 1
I had kept the Hawthorne family rich for six hundred years. At their annual corporate gala, the twenty-third heir called me dead weight and tried to cut my 60 percent distribution to 0.1 percent. I let him finish. Then I remembered the deed I had signed in 1906—and the ground beneath Hawthorne Tower that he had never truly owned.
I have been alive for six hundred years.
That sounds dramatic when written down. In practice, immortality mostly means watching people repeat old mistakes in newer clothes.
The Hawthorne family was one of my longer mistakes.
I had found their founder, Silas Hawthorne, half frozen behind a ruined chapel in northern England. He was an orphan with split boots, a stubborn jaw, and no useful future. I gave him bread, a wagon, and a pouch of silver coins. He used them well. Within twenty years, he had built one of the largest merchant fortunes in northern England.
On the night before his death, Silas made his eldest son kneel beside his bed.
“Miss Evelyn, you saved me when I had nothing,” he said. “Every generation after him will remember that debt. Every penny we earn carries your share. I am your servant for life, and my children will honor what I promised.”
I told him not to be theatrical. He cried anyway.
The family crossed the Atlantic generations later. By 1906, I had guided them toward Chicago and bought the parcel that would one day sit beneath their headquarters. By the time Ethan Hawthorne took control, the Hawthorne family enterprise had survived twenty-three generations, several wars, two depressions, three near-bankruptcies, and more bad heirs than I cared to count.
Ethan was different, or so everyone said.
After years abroad, he had returned to the United States and pushed the valuation of the public operating company, Hawthorne Technologies, Inc., up so fast that within a year its valuation had multiplied thirtyfold. Business magazines called him a visionary. Analysts called him fearless. Employees printed his quotes on office walls.
They called me something else.
They said I was freeloading.
I did not attend strategy meetings. I did not answer to a department head. I spent most mornings in the rooftop garden at Hawthorne Tower, drinking tea and reading while three thousand employees worked below me. At the end of each quarter, I signed for the distributions attached to my Class A Founder Units in Hawthorne Holdings LLC, the private parent company that controlled the listed operating subsidiary.
No one under sixty seemed to know why.
I never bothered to explain.
The arrangement had been simple once. Silas handled trade because motion made him happy and money gave his children safety. I supplied capital when it was useful, judgment when he asked, and rescue only when the family faced consequences larger than one fool deserved. The share he promised me was not charity. It was consideration for the first investment and for a standing obligation I had honored long after everyone who signed it was dead.
In the modern structure, those rights had been restated instead of left to folklore. Hawthorne Holdings LLC owned the controlling stake in Hawthorne Technologies, Inc. My Founder Units sat at the private parent level. They were not public stock, and I had never claimed a chair on the listed company’s board. The operating agreement gave me the distributions, manager seat, and consent protections that would soon prove so inconvenient.
That distinction mattered. Ethan liked to blur it in conversation because “old woman collecting money” sounded better than “the largest individual member of Hawthorne Holdings LLC whose capital and contractual protections made the group possible.” Most of the employees at the gala worked for Hawthorne Technologies. They saw my name on no org chart and assumed I had no role anywhere.
People rarely investigate a story that flatters them.
That was why Vanessa Cole felt safe approaching me at the annual corporate gala.
The ballroom overlooked downtown Chicago. The river below reflected the lights in broken gold strips. Vanessa wore a white dress sharp enough to look like armor. She was Ethan’s fiancée and chief strategy officer, the fiancée Ethan had brought back after years abroad. In less than twelve months, she had established herself as a formidable executive by firing people before breakfast and calling it discipline.
She stopped beside my table with a folder tucked under one arm.
“Ms. Vale,” she said, loud enough for the nearby executives to hear, “Ethan is too considerate to raise this himself, so I will.”
Ethan sat at the head table. He did not correct her.
Vanessa opened the folder. “You receive 60 percent of the distributions from Hawthorne Holdings LLC. You hold one designated manager seat. You also have a consent right over Founder Unit amendments, major asset sales, and related-party financing. Yet no one here has seen you contribute a day of work.”
The room quieted.
“In plain English,” she continued, “you are living off the Hawthorne family.”
A few people laughed into their glasses.
I set down my champagne. “Are you saying the Hawthorne family intends to break its agreement with me?”
“This is not about an old family promise.” Vanessa laid an amendment in front of me. “This is corporate optimization.”
The paper proposed exchanging my Class A Founder Units for 0.1% nonvoting Class C units. It also purported to remove my manager seat and erase every protected consent right in the same amendment.
Without my approval, the amendment was invalid under the operating agreement. Vanessa either did not know that or believed confidence could turn fiction into law.
“We are not leaving you with nothing,” she said. “The new units should still generate about $700,000 a year. More than enough for someone who’s never worked a day in her life.”
“Generous,” I said.
Ethan finally spoke. “Vanessa is direct, but she is right.”
He looked handsome in the polished, expensive way young men often confuse with authority.
“I spent the past year rebuilding this company,” he said. “The market rewarded performance. You spend your days drinking tea. Times have changed, Ms. Vale. Competence is what gives a person a voice.”
For a moment I saw another face over his: Silas, cheeks raw from snow, clutching a wooden bowl with both hands.
Then Ethan’s face returned.
“Sign,” Vanessa said. “Everyone walks away with dignity.”
I picked up the pen, turned it once between my fingers, and set it back down.
“No.”
Her smile vanished. “Excuse me?”
“I said no.”
“Do you understand what happens next? Mr. Hawthorne can freeze every distribution by morning.”
“Then he should try.”
I rose. Ethan watched me with the patient contempt of a man waiting for an outdated machine to fail.
“You believe the thirtyfold increase was yours alone,” I said. “Let us see how long your competence survives without me.”
Vanessa laughed as I walked away.
“Without us, you will not last a month.”
I did not turn around.
In the coatroom, an attendant handed me the black wool coat I had worn for thirty winters. Her fingers trembled.
“Ms. Vale,” she said, “I am sorry about what happened.”
“You did not do it.”
“No, but everyone watched.”
That was true. Public cruelty recruits witnesses. Some join. Some hide. A few remember that silence was still a choice.
“Keep your job,” I told her. “Nothing that happened tonight belongs on your conscience.”
Outside, the wind came off the river hard enough to cut through the crowd waiting for rides. My driver stepped forward, but I waved him back and walked half a block before getting into the car. Through the glass, I could see the top floors of Hawthorne Tower, including the rooftop garden Ethan thought he had allowed me to use.
I had spent eighty years improving that parcel. I had approved foundations, easements, utility access, and every material lease extension. None of that made the Hawthornes incompetent. Their architects had designed a good building. Their managers had built valuable companies. The family’s error was not accepting help. It was erasing the source of that help and claiming the resulting advantage as proof that I had never mattered.
My phone showed three messages from Richard. I did not open them.
Before the car pulled away, I sent one message to my assistant: Preserve every communication. Take no action yet.
I was not gathering evidence for a courtroom campaign. I already possessed the rights I needed. I wanted a clean record of their choices because even immortal people sometimes wonder whether they have judged too quickly.
I was giving Ethan the opportunity to disappoint me beyond doubt.
In 1906, I had purchased the most valuable thing the Hawthornes used every day. The Hawthorne family had built a tower on it. They had never purchased the ground.

CHASING GHOSTS
MOONLIT CHASE
But no, I had to walk through the park at midnight like an idiot. Now I've seen something I can't unsee—a massive black wolf tearing apart three men, then shifting into the hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on.
Kieran Vaughn. Wealthy lawyer, werewolf, and apparently, he thinks I'm his mate.
Here's the problem: I don't do relationships. I definitely don't do supernatural things. I absolutely don't do rich guys who think they can control my life just because their inner wolf has decided I smell like home.
When hunters start targeting me to get to him, Kieran drags me into his pristine penthouse for "protection." Now I'm living with a man who looks at me like I'm his last meal, whose touch sets my skin on fire, and who's barely holding onto his control.
He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.
And in his world? Love will get you killed.
My Billionaire Husband's Secret
He was the CEO of the Blackwood Group — a man whose wealth and power eclipsed ninety-nine percent of the world.
He was gentle. Romantic. Attentive. I fell for him fast.
But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.
Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.
Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.
Do you really know your husband?
From that day on, my life filled with shadows.
I suspected my husband of having an affair.
When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.
I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.
My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."
The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"
I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.
But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.
Does Lucas truly love me?
And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?
My Alpha's Fake Luna
Those were the last words my Alpha whispered before he severed our bond.

I was wrong.
For two years, I thought Alpha Michael never loved me.
Every misunderstanding pushed us farther apart.
Every silence broke another piece of my heart.
While another woman slowly took my place.
But everything changed after the death of the Grand Alpha.
My mate began watching me.
Protecting me.
Holding me whenever I fell.
Looking at me like he was terrified of losing me.
If he hated me...
Why did he keep risking everything for me?
And why did everyone panic the moment I finally chose another future?

Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
The Lycan Kings and the White Wolf.
