Chapter 1

"Are you ready for your first day of college?" I heard my mom yell from the kitchen.

"Very!" I responded, excited to start my days at Partha Octia University.

They made the University for us supernatural kids that wanted jobs in supernatural fields. I was entering the medical field, specializing in werewolves, minoring in shape shifters. A lot of the anatomy is the same there.

It thrilled me to leave this small town and meet new people. In my life, I have only been acquainted with a handful of werewolves and a couple of fairies. I was about to enter a world full of different creatures and the excitement was eating away at me.

"You're sure you got everything?" My mother, the worry wart questioned. Her short brown hair hovered over her shoulders as she cocked her head to the side.

"Yes," I told her, seeing a small reflection of myself in her green eyes.

"I can't believe you're starting college!" She yelled, pulling me in for about the 100th hug today.

"Not if we don't get going soon." I nudged her towards the door. She was dragging her feet, not ready to send me out.

"Okay, okay." She waved her hands in surrender. "Let's go!"

Partha Octia University was about 4 hours away from home. Far enough that my mom won't visit every day, but close enough for me to come home during the weekends or holidays.

The drive felt so long. I had a small ball of anxiety building up in my stomach, ready to make its way up my throat and out of my mouth. As we pulled into the school, I could see countless parents giving their last hugs and saying goodbye. Suitcases lined the sidewalks along with boxes slowly being taken in.

Mom parked beside a little blue Volkswagen with crying parents inside. My heart broke a little for my mom and myself. We had been like best friends, always sharing our problems and being there for one another. I know it was going to be a change for both of us. We got down from the car, heading to check in.

The excitement and anxiety were mixing into this enormous ball of nerves, making me want to kick my mom to the curb, but also not wanting to let her go. I walked up to the counter, eyeing the overly bubbly RA. Her pixie cut nicely framed her round face that beamed a wide smile at me.

"Hello, and welcome to Partha Octia University. My name is Brittney, and I'm the RA from these dorms. What's your name? I'll get you all checked in and set to go." Her tone was extremely chipper and squeaky.

"I'm Rain Lancaster," I explained to her, returning a small smile.

"Well, hello Rain. What a unique name," she added as she walked over to a computer. "Let's see…you're in room 204. That's just upstairs. It seems your roommate has already checked in. How exciting!" She clapped her hands.

"Pardon me? I had requested a single dorm." Brittney's smile faded faster than a blink of an eye.

"There are no single dorms here at Partha Octia University," she said seriously before plastering that smile on her face again. "Now, let me lead you to the elevator."

She grabbed my bag from me before I could protest and led the way down the hall. We squeezed past parents, students, and volunteers as we made our way. My anxiety continued to build. I could feel my skin crawling. My wolf hated being in crowded areas. She enjoyed being alone, we were raised outside of a pack. We looked after ourselves all our life.

'Honestly Rain, Brittney is lucky I didn't slap that smile off her face,' Heli, my wolf, chimed in my mind. "Remind me why we stayed in a dorm?"

As if on cue, my mom grabbed me and squeezed me into a tight hug in front of everyone. My cheeks felt hot as the blush crossed my face. I wanted to melt away when my mother gushed.

"My baby is all grown up. Where has the time gone?" She asked, squeezing my cheeks together with her palms.

"Mom, stop it. You're embarrassing me," I whispered, pushing her hands away. She frowned, making me feel a small pang of guilt. "Could you please just wait till we are outside again for that?" I asked, trying to make her feel better. She cleared her throat.

  "Right, yes, of course."

We entered the elevators with Brittney handing me my bag, not joining us.

"Just hit the 2, and turn right out of the elevator. It should be the 2nd door on the left," she instructed as the elevator closed on that ever-present smile of hers.

'I've determined that we are not a fan of Brittney,' Heli chimed in again, and I wholeheartedly agreed.

We did as Britney instructed, and got off the elevator, reaching the door clearly labeled 204. I stared at the big black numbers, realizing this would be my home for the next 9 months. I swallowed down the nervousness that had crept into my throat and opened the door.

A girl with long, light brown hair and long, thin features turned to look at me. Her eyes were taking me in, just as mine were doing to her. She neither said anything nor moved to greet me. She unpacked her things without a word. I wasn't sure if I was happy with this or not. On the one hand, she would stay out of my business. She could be a complete bitch.

I moved over to the empty bed, placing my bag over it. I looked over at mom who had made her way to my roommate.

'Oh no, no, stop her!' Heli all but yelled at me.

Before I could reach to turn mom away, she had stretched her hand out to the long-haired girl.

"Hi, you must be Rain's roommate. I'm her mother-" before mom could even say her name, the girl (I'm now deeming a bitch) held her hand up to stop her.

"I'm going to stop you there." Her voice was harsh. Possibly British? "I'm not here to make friends, having plenty of those already. I'm serious about my studies, which means I have no time for riff raff. They did not previously state to me that there were no single dorms. I will treat this as if it were one. For the next 9 months, your daughter does not exist for me. Do not ask me for anything," she quickly stated, leaving my mother open-mouthed in shock.

My anger quickly rose, as Heli wanted to beat the living shit out of this girl. My teeth sharpened, and my nails elongated. She seemed to sense the danger as she turned to me and scampered away. My mother stepped in front of me.

"Calm down, sweetheart. I'm fine. Not offended at all. Perhaps it is for the best. You wanted a single dorm, anyway," she comforted me.

After I calmed down, we went back down and brought the rest of my things up to the dorm. My roommate stayed gone for an hour before returning to finish unpacking.

My mother and I said our tearful goodbyes, and I promised her to keep in touch and eat healthily. I planned on keeping at least one of those promises.

"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."

When the doctor explained the surgical risks and potential complications, I smiled and nodded my understanding.

Even Allen, who'd always been cold to me, held my hand gently and said, "The surgery's safe. You're so healthy, nothing will go wrong. When you recover, I'll take you to Hawaii."

But they don't know that no matter how the surgery goes, I won't be around to celebrate.

Because I just got my own test results—I have terminal brain cancer. I'm going to die anyway.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
