This Time, I Watch the Zombies Take Them
Angela · Ongoing · 9.0k Words
Introduction
My mother-in-law, determined to get her hands on my savings, secretly switched my medication with cheap knockoffs and left me permanently infertile.
Then she showed up at my office and made a huge scene, pressuring me to quit my job and become a full-time househusband.
As for her and Sarah? They had the nerve to move in some so-called lover who could "carry on the family line," then used my hard-earned money to support him under my own roof.
When the apocalypse hit, they locked me in a room and fed me to that infected homewrecker.
Now that I've been given a second chance, I look at the three parasites standing in front of me—mocking me, acting self-righteous...
I feel no anger. Only amusement.
Fourteen days until the zombie outbreak, and they're still dreaming about how to bleed me dry.
This time, I'm taking back every cent they stole from me—with interest.
And when the end finally comes, I'll be sitting inside my impenetrable safe house, watching with ice in my veins as they turn on each other in despair.
Chapter 1
I jolted awake on the couch, drenched in cold sweat. Every breath tore through my lungs like broken glass.
My mind was still trapped in the nightmare of my last life—the spray of blood, the tearing jaws of zombies, the sound of Sarah's family shutting the door on me, and my own screams as I realized I'd been left there to die.
I looked around.
The same cramped living room. The same peeling wallpaper. A few dirty coffee mugs scattered across the table.
And on the wall, the calendar.
The date was clear.
Less than two weeks until the global zombie outbreak.
I had come back.
Just then, the bedroom door opened.
Sarah walked out in a silk nightgown. Right behind her came a younger man wearing nothing but boxer briefs, his hair messy, his face smug.
Leo.
"Since you're awake, David, go wash the cups from last night," Sarah said casually, as if bringing her lover home was the most natural thing in the world. She walked to the fridge, took out a carton of milk, and didn't even bother to look at me.
I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms.
The pain told me this was real.
"Sarah," I said, my voice low and cold, "what exactly do you think you're doing?"
She gave a contemptuous laugh and leaned against the counter.
"David, spare me the head-of-household act. You're unemployed, useless, and living off this family. What do you do besides sit around the house all day? You can't even do what a real man is supposed to do anymore. Leo can give me a child. Can you?"
Leo stepped up beside her and slipped an arm around her waist like he belonged there. Then he looked at me and raised an eyebrow.
"Don't get so worked up, man. Sarah's just thinking about the future of the family. Somebody's got to carry on the bloodline, right?"
At that moment, the guest room door swung open.
My mother-in-law, Martha, shuffled out in slippers, her face already twisted with irritation.
"David, why are you yelling this early in the morning?" she snapped. "Do you have any idea what would happen if you disturbed Leo's rest?"
Then, as always, her expression changed instantly when she turned to him.
"Oh, sweetheart, did you sleep well?" she asked with sickening warmth. "I'll make you eggs and bacon right away."
Then she looked back at me like I was garbage.
"And you've got the nerve to stand there with an attitude? You don't bring in a paycheck, and you can't even give my daughter a baby. Useless. If you ask me, you don't even deserve that couch. Tonight you can sleep out in the hallway. Leo needs space for his luggage."
As I looked at the three of them—those three revolting faces—a chill spread through me from the inside out.
How stupid had I been in my last life?
A few months earlier, Sarah had nearly been hit by a car that jumped the curb.
I pushed her out of the way without a second thought.
I was the one who ended up badly injured.
At the hospital, I could have made a full recovery with the proper imported medication. But Martha, desperate to pocket the money that should have gone toward my treatment, pressured the doctor into switching me to the cheapest low-grade substitute.
The price I paid was permanent infertility.
And she hadn't stopped there.
Because she didn't like how much time I spent at work instead of catering to Sarah, she stormed into my office and made such a scene that I had no choice but to resign.
That was how I became the live-in servant of this house.
The roof over their heads, the bills being paid, even the bacon and eggs Martha was about to cook for Leo—it all came from the money I had earned and saved.
A house full of parasites.
They hadn't just drained me dry. They wanted to grind up whatever was left and feed it to Sarah's precious little boyfriend.
And the most pathetic part?
In my last life, I endured it all in the name of love and responsibility.
Right up until the world ended.
"What are you standing there for?" Martha shrilled. "Go clean the kitchen!"
Leo dropped lazily onto the couch and yawned.
"Martha, don't be too hard on him. Housework's probably the only thing that makes him feel useful these days."
I took a slow, deep breath.
Then I loosened my fists.
The anger vanished from my face completely.
I didn't answer them. I didn't go wash the dishes like I had in my last life.
Instead, I walked to the coat rack and took my jacket.
"Where do you think you're going?" Sarah frowned, clearly irritated that I was ignoring all three of them.
"To find a job," I said, putting it on without looking back.
"A job?" Martha burst into harsh laughter from the kitchen. "Who would hire a worthless loser like you? Let me make this very clear—if you don't find work before sunset, don't expect dinner in this house."
"David," Sarah added from behind me, her voice dripping with command and contempt, "pick up some premium Wagyu from the store. Leo wants steak tonight."
My hand rested on the doorknob.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
Buy steak for them?
There were less than fourteen days left until the apocalypse.
Soon, hell would sweep through every street in this city.
The people who had ruined me, the greedy and rotten souls who fed on my life, would pay for everything beneath the teeth of the dead.
I wasn't going to waste another second on these parasites.
I was going out.
I was going to use my money—my money—to rent a place no one could break into.
I was going to stockpile supplies enough to outlast the end of the world.
This time, I wouldn't just survive.
I would stand above it all and watch them scream.
I said nothing to Sarah. I ignored Martha's sneering voice completely.
Then I walked out without looking back.
The front door slammed shut behind me with a heavy bang.

My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.
