Introduction

Princess Delphine Rourke is being married off to end a war she didn't start. The terms are simple: three months in Thornhollow, the last unclaimed rogue territory, to prove the crown can tame it before her wedding to Prince Alaric Sterling. What nobody prepared her for is the four Alphas who actually run Thornhollow, men the crown calls criminals and the territory calls kings. She is supposed to fear them. Instead, for the first time in her caged, arranged life, she feels something with teeth. But the bond that's supposed to decide who she belongs to doesn't point where anyone expects, and the truth of it will burn Thornhollow down before it lets her go quietly.

Chapter 1

Delphine's POV

The first thing that hit the carriage wasn't a rock. It was fire.

I felt the heat before I heard the shout, a wall of orange light slapping against the window glass so fast I didn't have time to scream. The horses screamed instead. The whole carriage lurched sideways, and I grabbed the seat with both hands so hard my knuckles went white.

"Get down!" my guard yelled, but there was nowhere to go. We were trapped in a box that was now on fire, rolling toward a gate made of black iron and taller than any wall I'd ever seen.

I had spent three weeks preparing for this moment. I had practiced my greeting in the mirror. I had memorized the names of the men I was supposed to convince that a princess could tame a warzone. Nobody told me I would be doing it while my carriage burned.

The door flew open before I could reach it myself. Someone yanked me out by the arm, hard enough that my shoulder screamed, and threw me onto the dirt like I weighed nothing at all. I hit the ground and rolled, dust in my mouth, my ears ringing from the horses still shrieking behind me.

When I looked up, the carriage was fully burning. Everything I owned. Every dress, every letter from home, every small piece of the life I used to have, gone in one wall of fire that lit up four faces standing above me like they'd planned it that way.

Because they had.

"That's the last thing that rolls in here on royal wheels," one of them said. He didn't sound angry. That was the worst part. He sounded bored, like burning a carriage with a princess still inside it was something he did before breakfast most days.

I looked up at him from the dirt and made myself stop shaking. My father always said a Rourke does not cry in front of people who want to see her cry. I didn't know yet that this man wanted nothing from me at all, not tears, not fear, not even an apology. He just wanted me gone.

"You could have killed me," I said. My voice came out steadier than I expected. That surprised both of us, I think.

"If I wanted you dead," he said, "you'd be dead. This was a warning. Warnings are polite." He crouched down so we were closer to eye level, and up close I could see his eyes weren't cruel, exactly. They were tired. Tired in a way that made him look older than he probably was. "You'll last two weeks. Maybe less."

I didn't answer that. I was too busy noticing the second one, the one already crouched beside me instead of standing over me, who reached out a hand like he actually meant to help me up instead of just watching me struggle.

"Osric's dramatic," the second one said, grinning like none of this was a disaster. "Ignore him. He does this to everyone who shows up in something shinier than dirt." His hand was warm. I took it without thinking, and he pulled me to my feet like I weighed even less than nothing. "Barnaby," he added, as if we were meeting at a party rather than standing in front of a burning carriage. "You survived your welcome. That's a good sign, actually."

Behind him, a third man hadn't moved at all. He watched me with an expression I couldn't read, arms crossed, saying nothing, like he was deciding something about me and hadn't finished yet. He didn't introduce himself. He didn't need to. Something about the way he looked at me made my skin go tight, like being studied by someone who already knew things about me I hadn't said out loud.

"She's going to run home crying by sundown," the fourth one said. He was younger-looking than the others but sharper somehow, like a blade nobody had bothered to put in a sheath. "Save us all the trouble and tell her now, Osric."

"I'm not running anywhere," I said, before I could stop myself.

The one called Osric, the one who'd told me I'd last two weeks, looked at me for a long moment. Something flickered behind his eyes, something that wasn't boredom anymore. I didn't understand it yet. I only knew it made my stomach do something strange and uncomfortable, something I didn't have a name for.

"We'll see," he said.

They led me through the gate without another word, past homes that looked nothing like the palace I'd grown up in, past people who stopped what they were doing to watch me walk by like I was something dangerous that had wandered into their territory by mistake. I kept my chin up. I had promised myself I would not shrink, not once, no matter what Thornhollow threw at me.

I was given a room at the top of a narrow staircase, small and plain, with one window that looked out over the whole burned wreck of my old life still smoking at the gate. I sat on the edge of the bed and finally let myself shake, just a little, just for a second, because nobody was watching anymore.

That's when I felt it.

It came out of nowhere, a pull so sudden and so strong it knocked the air out of my chest like someone had grabbed my ribs from the inside. It wasn't fear. It wasn't the fire, or the men, or the burning carriage. It was something deeper than all of that, something that felt like my whole body had just recognized a person I hadn't even seen yet.

The bond. My father's advisors had warned me it might happen someday, a pull so powerful it could not be ignored, a sign that somewhere in this world was the one person I was fated to belong to.

I had never felt anything like it in my life.

And it wasn't pulling me toward the door where Osric had gone. It wasn't pulling me toward Barnaby, or the quiet one, or the sharp one who wanted me gone by sundown.

It was pulling me downstairs, toward a room I had never even entered, toward someone I hadn't met yet at all.

My legs moved before my mind caught up. I didn't decide to stand. I didn't decide to walk toward the stairs like something invisible had a hand wrapped around my heart and was tugging me forward.

I reached the study door with my pulse slamming in my ears, and I pushed it open, already certain of one impossible thing.

Whoever was on the other side of that door was about to change everything.

My breathing accelerated, small sounds escaping my throat as he explored my body. His touches were both punishment and pleasure, drawing shudders from me that I thought he felt reverberating through his own body.

My nightgown had ridden up, his hands discovering more of mine with each caress. We were both lost in sensation, rational thought receding with each passing second...

I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!
