Chapter 1
Natalie POV
I've waited on presidents.
Not real ones but the kind that act like it. Hedge fund guys with watches that cost more than my rent. CEOs who snap their fingers at servers like we're trained dogs. Sports agents who tip fifteen percent and think that's generous.
So when the restaurant went quiet that specific, sharp quiet that hits a room all at once like someone cut the sound with scissors I didn't look up immediately.
I was in the middle of balancing three plates of branzino and my lower back was staging its own personal protest after a six-hour shift. I had four tables running, a birthday party in the corner that kept changing their dessert order, and Marcus the busboy had called in sick, which meant I was also resetting tables between courses.
I did not have time for whatever this was.
But then I felt it.
Not heard. Felt.
That particular kind of silence that doesn't come from surprise. It comes from something older than that. Something closer to instinct. The kind of quiet a room makes when it recognizes real power walking through the door and decides without discussion that breathing loudly might be a bad idea.
I set the plates down at table seven, smiled at the couple who'd been waiting, and finally turned around.
The man was already looking at me.
Not at the room. Not at the hostess, who was moving toward him with the practiced smile she saved for very important guests. Not at Gerald, the floor manager, who was basically jogging a man who never jogged anywhere toward the entrance with the expression of someone trying very hard not to look panicked.
He was looking at me.
I registered the details quickly, the way I've always processed a room. Old habit. In the ring, you take in your opponent in the first three seconds or you spend the rest of the fight catching up. Tall. Well over six feet. Dark suit, no tie but not casual. The kind of no-tie that's a choice, not an oversight. Black hair. Strong jaw. And still. Completely, unnervingly still, like someone had placed a very beautiful statue in the middle of Rosario's entrance and told it to look intimidating.
He was good at it.
His eyes didn't move from my face.
I turned back to table seven and asked if they needed anything else.
Jade caught me at the service station two minutes later, grabbed my elbow hard enough to leave a mark, and yanked me half behind the pillar.
"Okay," she breathed, "do not react."
"React to what?"
"The man who just walked in."
"The tall one."
"Natalie." She said my name like it was two separate words. "That is Lorenzo Ricci."
She waited. Clearly expecting something from me.
I pulled my elbow back. "Okay."
"Okay?" She stared. "Nat. Lorenzo Ricci. He owns I mean he owns owns half of lower Manhattan. The restaurant. The building the restaurant is in. Probably the block. He doesn't come in. He's never come in. Not once in the fourteen months I've worked here."
I looked across the room. Lorenzo Ricci was now seated at the best table the one that appeared available by magic whenever someone important walked in and Gerald was hovering nearby with the energy of a man whose entire career was flashing before his eyes.
"Okay," I said again.
Jade grabbed my arm again. "He's looking over here."
I didn't check. "He looked at me when he walked in. He's probably just looking at the section."
"Natalie. He is looking at you."
I picked up my notepad. "Then I should probably go take his order."
I'm not fearless. I want to be clear about that.
I've been afraid plenty of times. Standing in locker rooms before fights I wasn't sure I could win. Signing contracts I didn't fully understand at twenty-two because I trusted people I shouldn't have. The drive to the hospital when my old trainer Gloria collapsed and I didn't know yet if she was going to be okay.
Fear and I are well acquainted.
But I learned a long time ago that fear is just information. It tells you something is at stake. That's all. What you do with it after is the whole story.
So I walked across Rosario's past the tables that went carefully quiet as I moved, past Gerald, who gave me a look I couldn't fully read and I stopped at Lorenzo Ricci's table.
He looked up.
Close up, he was even more something. The word that came to me was complete like a person who had finished becoming themselves a long time ago and was no longer interested in other people's opinions about it. His eyes were dark and direct and they moved over my face with the unhurried confidence of a man who was used to seeing exactly what he wanted to see.
I pulled out my notepad.
"Good evening," I said. "Can I tell you about our specials tonight?"
He looked at me like I had said something in a foreign language. Like the concept of specials, in this context, from this particular person, did not compute.
I kept my pen ready and my face pleasant.
He said nothing for what was probably four seconds but felt considerably longer.
"Sure," he said finally. His voice was low. Unhurried. Italian accent underneath the English, subtle but there.
I told him the specials. All four of them. Clearly and completely, because that is my job and I do my job properly. He listened. I couldn't tell if he was actually listening or just watching my mouth move, and I decided the distinction was not my problem.
When I finished, he said: "Just water for now."
"Of course." I wrote it down. "I'll be back when you're ready."
I turned and walked away.
I made it exactly six steps before Jade appeared at my side again, mouth open.
"You just treated Lorenzo Ricci like he was a regular person."
"He is a regular person. He's a person who wants water."
"Nat"
"Jade." I stopped walking and looked at her. "I have three other tables. I have a birthday party that has changed their cake order twice. I have no idea where Marcus is with the linen reset and the four-top by the window is about to ask for their check. He gets water. Same as everyone else." I patted her arm. "It's fine."
She looked at me the way people look at someone who is walking confidently in the wrong direction and doesn't realize it yet.
The rest of the shift moved around that table like water around a rock.
Every time I went back to bring the water, to take his food order, to refill, to clear he watched me with that same focused, unreadable attention. He ordered the lamb, which was the right choice. He ate without looking at his phone, which was rare for anyone under sixty. When I asked if everything was to his liking, he said yes with a directness that somehow landed different than the usual automatic yes.
Around me, the rest of the room was performing. Laughing a little louder. Straightening up a little more when they passed his table. Gerald had permanently relocated himself to the far side of the floor, which was where he stood when he wanted to look available without being close enough to be spoken to.
I didn't perform.
I don't know how to, honestly. I've tried. It always comes out wrong on me, too stiff or too cheerful, like wearing someone else's coat. So I just do the job. Clear and warm and professional. Same as always.
He had coffee after dinner. Black.
When I brought it, he looked up and said: "How long have you worked here?"
"Three months," I said.
He looked at the coffee. Then back at me. "You're the only person on this floor who's treated me like a normal customer tonight."
I wasn't sure if this was a compliment or a complaint. I said: "Was that wrong of me?"
Something moved through his expression. It was quick and hard to name. "No," he said.
I nodded. "Enjoy the coffee."
I was at the service station writing up my closing side work when Gerald appeared at my shoulder. He was doing the thing with his hands the wringing thing he only did when something made him very nervous.
"Natalie."
"Gerald."
"Mr. Ricci" He stopped. Cleared his throat. Did more hand-wringing. "He's asked to speak with management about the section allocation."
I looked up from my notepad. "Sorry?"
"He's" Gerald glanced across the room. "He's asked that your section be adjusted for his visits."
I stared at him. "My section."
"Yes."
I waited. Gerald looked like he was delivering news he'd rather not be delivering.
"He wants to be in my section specifically?"
Gerald nodded once. Quickly.
I looked across the room. Lorenzo Ricci was still at his table, coffee finished, hands resting loosely in front of him. He wasn't looking over. He didn't need to.
He had already said what he wanted.
I turned back to Gerald. "Okay," I said, because what else do you say to that. "Is that all?"
Gerald nodded again, relieved at my non-reaction in the way that made me wonder what reaction he'd been expecting.
I went back to my side work.
But I was aware in a way I hadn't been before, a specific, bright awareness that sat somewhere behind my ribs that Lorenzo Ricci was still in that room.
And that something had just changed, in some way I hadn't agreed to and couldn't fully name yet.
Jade found me in the break room at close.
"Okay," she said, "I have to tell you what I just saw."
I was already pulling on my coat.
"Gerald went over to his table," she said. "And Mr. Ricci said something to him. I couldn't hear it. But Gerald nodded like his life depended on it and then" she paused for effect "he pointed at you, Nat. Across the restaurant. At you specifically. And he said"
She stopped herself. Dramatic.
"Jade."
"Four words," she said. "Gerald told me after. Four words."
I looked at her.
She said them slowly, like each one was its own sentence:
"Move her to me."
The break room went very quiet.
My coat was half on. I finished putting it on. I picked up my bag. I thought about a man who walked into a room and made the whole thing hold its breath. I thought about dark eyes that found me across a restaurant full of people performing and chose, specifically, to watch the one person who wasn't.
I thought: I don't know who you are.
And then, underneath that, quieter:
But I think you just decided you want me to find out.
I walked out into the cold New York night and told myself the feeling in my chest was just the end of a long shift.
I almost believed it.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.
On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.
“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.
Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:
“Until you die!”
With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.
But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.
My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.
I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!

After One Night with the Alpha
I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.
My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.
But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.
In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.
"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.
"Who the fuck is Jason?"
My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.
I ran away for my life!
But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!
They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”
There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
