Introduction

“Where are you going, Vesper?”

I looked at my husband’s hand blocking the elevator door—and then at Blythe standing behind him, wearing the smile of a woman who already believed she had won.

“Somewhere my child and I are not treated like tools.”

For eight years, I had built my life around Rhys Hawthorne. I worked beside him, protected his business, became his wife, and carried his child. But when I needed him most, he chose Blythe.

Then they accused me of a three-million-dollar corporate scandal, froze my access, blocked my resignation, and even withheld my acceptance letter to a prestigious design school in Milan.

They thought a pregnant woman had nowhere to go.

They were wrong.

With a professor, a lawyer, a trail of evidence—and my unborn daughter beside me—I am finally ready to fight back.

But there is one thing I still don't know…

Why is Blythe so desperate to keep me from leaving?

Chapter 1

Vesper's POV

"Rhys, your tie clip just scraped my nipple."

The soft, breathy voice slipped through the half-open door of the VIP ward.

I stopped walking. In my hand was the ultrasound printout I had just collected from the technician downstairs — the four-dimensional scan, still warm from the printer.

"Can't help yourself? Then we'll do it right here. I'll make you come."

My husband's voice was low and unhurried, carrying an indulgence I had never once heard in eight years of marriage.

I pushed open the door.

The charged atmosphere inside the room solidified the moment I stepped through. Blythe — the young nurse who had accompanied me to my prenatal appointment not an hour ago — was perched on the examination bed, her blouse unbuttoned, her skirt pushed up around her thighs, Rhys's suit jacket draped across her shoulders. There was no denying she was beautiful in a way I had never been: fine-boned and flawless, like a collector's doll. Rhys stood directly in front of her, his long fingers brushing a strand of hair away from her temple. When he heard the door, he turned and looked at me — not with guilt, not with alarm, but with the tight-browed irritation of a man whose private space has been invaded by someone who has no business being there. Even as his eyes met mine, his hand dropped from her hair and settled, quite deliberately, onto her chest.

He had never once considered me worth accounting for.

"What are you doing here?" he said.

I stepped into the room. "This is the maternity ward, Rhys," I said, keeping my voice level. "I'm here for my prenatal checkup."

Blythe leaned around his shoulder and tilted her head at me with the practiced ease of someone who has never once felt threatened. "Vesper, carrying a baby is so hard on you. Since you can't sleep with Rhys right now, I've been happy to fill in." Her gaze dropped to my rounded stomach, and a small smile crossed her lips. Then she turned to Rhys and murmured, in French, low enough that she clearly expected it to pass unnoticed: "Elle est grosse comme un morse."

Rhys said nothing. His expression did not shift by a single degree. He simply looked at me with that flat, patient contempt and said, "You've had your checkup. Go home. Don't embarrass yourself in here."

I pressed my fingernail into my palm. The sting helped me think clearly.

Eight years of loving him in silence. One night together — engineered, I later understood, by people with interests of their own — and he had been forced to marry me, a stain on an otherwise clean record. I had told myself that time would wear down the distance between us. I had been wrong. He was never cold by nature. He had simply given his warmth to someone else.

This should never have begun. And it needed to end now.

"Rhys," I said, "you're in a maternity ward VIP room, with a nurse, with her blouse open. I think we should talk about who exactly is embarrassing themselves."

His jaw tightened. He stepped forward, his height and the breadth of his shoulders filling the space between us in a way that was clearly meant to diminish me. "Watch your tone, Vesper."

I held out the ultrasound printout.

"It's a girl," I said. "Let's file for divorce today. I'll take her and leave. That way you'll never have to worry about me embarrassing the Hawthorne name again."

He didn't take the paper. He didn't even look at it.

"I told you from the beginning — we divorce after you deliver." His voice was flat and cold. "You don't get to change the terms. The family will provide you with a settlement, more than enough for the rest of your life." He paused. "But the child — boy or girl — stays with the Hawthornes. That is not negotiable."

Blythe stepped forward and tucked her hand into the crook of his arm. "Vesper, why make this harder than it needs to be? Think of it as surrogacy. You get paid, we get what we want, and nobody has to pretend there were feelings involved." She glanced at me with something close to pity, then added, in French: "Une femme sans dignité."

A woman with no dignity.

She assumed I wouldn't understand. To her, I was simply a woman with no connections and a convenient pregnancy, someone who had leveraged a bump in the road into a temporary position in this family.

I looked at her carefully composed face.

"Les morses ont au moins une peau épaisse," I said, in an accent considerably closer to Parisian than hers, "mais toi, tu n'as même pas de visage."

At least a walrus has thick skin. You don't even have the decency to keep your face on straight.

The smile dropped off her. Her eyes widened slightly, as though her ears had malfunctioned.

Rhys went still for just a moment. He looked at me, and something moved through his expression — brief, involuntary. "You speak French?"

"I'm fluent in five languages, Rhys." I held his gaze. "You were my employer before you were my husband. Did you never look at my résumé?"

The muscle along his jaw pulled tight. "It doesn't change anything," he said, his voice hardening back into its usual register. "Don't show off in front of Blythe. It doesn't suit you."

I watched him step back into position beside her, one hand moving to shield her almost without his noticing it, and whatever small, stubborn remnant of hope I had been carrying finally went quiet.

"I'm not showing off," I said. "Have the divorce papers drafted and send them to me whenever you're ready."

I turned and walked to the door. At the threshold I stopped, without turning around.

"One more thing, Rhys. That tie clip — I bought it for you. There's a pinhole camera in the clasp." I kept my voice conversational. "Your grandfather asked us both to dinner tonight. I thought I'd bring the footage along and let him watch it with us."

By the time evening settled over the old estate, the dining room had gone quiet enough that the only sound was silver against porcelain. The Hawthorne family dinners ran on protocol and silence in roughly equal measure. Grandfather sat at the head of the table, his reading glasses perched low on his nose, turning the ultrasound image slowly in his hands.

"A girl?" He looked up.

I lowered my eyes. "Yes, Grandfather."

The lines of his face rearranged themselves into something that, on a less weathered man, might have been called delight. "Four generations of boys in this family," he said. "About time."

Across the table, Rhys was cutting his steak with the unhurried precision he brought to everything. He did not look up. "A girl is useless," he said. "She'll be married off for an alliance eventually. She can't inherit anything that matters."

The old man's walking stick came down on the carpet with a dull, heavy crack. "What kind of thing is that to say?"

Rhys set down his cutlery and touched the corner of his mouth with his napkin. His expression was one of barely contained impatience. "I'm stating facts, Grandfather. If she hadn't gotten pregnant, I wouldn't be sitting at this table." His eyes moved to me — a brief, undisguised sweep of distaste. "Honestly, looking at her like this, I can barely eat."

My knuckles had gone pale around the handle of my fork. The pregnancy had thickened my already soft frame, and the hormonal patches of pigmentation across my cheeks caught the light of the chandelier with a frankness I couldn't hide.

Then Rhys's phone vibrated against the table. He glanced at the screen, and the hard set of his features loosened — not much, but enough to notice.

"I'm done." He pushed back his chair and lifted his jacket from the back of it. "Grandfather, something's come up at the office. I'll head out."

The old man made a short, dismissive sound. "The office," he repeated. "Or the woman from that video?"

Rhys stopped mid-step. For just a moment, genuine surprise broke through the composure — he turned and looked at me, as though he hadn't quite believed I would actually do it.
