Introduction

When I was ten, my parents faked a messy divorce and turned my life into a sick reality show.
They split up me and my twin sister, Romy. She got the Alpine mansion and my mother's luxurious lifestyle.
I was dumped in a moldy basement, scrubbing diner plates and clinging to my physics books to survive my father's "gambling addiction."
For eight years, I starved to pay off his staged debts. Then, on our eighteenth birthday, Romy casually texted me a link to StreamLens, an exclusive voyeur site for bored billionaires, followed by a few stabbing messages:
[Surprise, sis. Mom and Dad never actually split. We're perfectly happy ]
[It's honestly sad watching you skip meals, but you know how it is.]
[You were the "older sister," so they chose you to be the one raised in the dirt.]
I clicked the link. The site's #1 live feed was a giant split screen titled: "The Twin Experiment: Raised Poor vs. Raised Rich—Which Sister Comes Out on Top?"
On the left: me, freezing in a leaky cellar. On the right: Gareth and Marissa playfully hugging Romy on a velvet sofa, slicing into a massive birthday cake. The debt, the loan sharks, my absolute misery—it was all just entertainment.
Through the feed, Romy stared straight into the hidden camera, flashing a sickly-sweet smile.
“Smile for the cameras, sis. Your suffering bought us this gorgeous house.”

Chapter 1

Standing in the alley behind the diner, I glared at my screen as a freezing sensation crept into my fingertips.

StreamLens wasn't a site you could just casually join; it was strictly by invitation.

Its audience consisted of ultra-wealthy elites who treated the misery of strangers like a reality TV show.

And for the past eight years, I had unwittingly been their top-rated attraction.

A playback video on the main feed showed my ten-year-old self stepping into this moldering cellar for the very first time.

I remembered my father, Gareth, assuring me that he and my mother, Marissa, were splitting up, claiming his business ventures had entirely collapsed.

He immediately took up heavy drinking and blew whatever little cash we had left at the poker tables.

Even though I was practically a child, I took sketchy, under-the-table jobs just to keep his bookies at bay.

The video abruptly shifted. My mother was enthusiastically giving Romy a tour of her massive new bedroom.

It featured a plush canopy bed, a huge walk-in wardrobe, and massive glass windows with a perfect view of a manicured lawn.

A bold headline flashed right between the split screens.

[The Twin Experiment, Day 1.]

There had never been a legal separation.

The bankruptcy was a complete lie.

My parents merely required one daughter to rot in a dungeon while the other got to live like royalty in a sprawling estate.

The twisted joke of it all bubbled up inside me until I was laughing so hard my vision blurred with hot tears.

My phone buzzed again. Romy had just fired off two more texts.

[Sucks you were the one they threw away, sis.]

[Watching you starve over the internet every day makes me feel kinda bad while I’m chilling in this huge place.]

She typed out her supposed guilt, but followed it up with a bright, mocking smiley face emoji.

"Reeve!"

My shift supervisor barked, sticking his head out the back door.

"Booth three is a mess. Are you expecting the guests to bus their own plates?"

I locked my screen, shoving it into my apron pocket right next to a folded-up sheet of physics equations I'd been trying to solve between shifts, and hurried back inside.

This dreary routine was my reality every single afternoon.

Whenever my father lost heavily at the tables, he left me completely broke.

On the rare instances he actually won, he would casually throw a crumpled twenty-dollar bill on the counter, expecting me to stretch it out for an entire week.

I honestly used to believe he was struggling but doing his best.

Now I realized that his frequent overnight absences were spent sleeping comfortably at their luxury estate in the hills.

By the time I trudged back to my cellar apartment, it was ten o'clock.

There was no AC to speak of.

The stifling summer heat caused the damp stench of mold to rise off the concrete, gagging me as soon as I turned the key.

The single overhead bulb flickered a couple of times before popping out entirely.

Navigating blindly to my rickety desk in the dark, I tapped the StreamLens app back open.

The left half of the live feed showed a gloomy room where a teenager had just walked through the front door.

She was dressed in my exact grease-stained work polo and hauling my beat-up rucksack.

I froze in my tracks.

The figure on the monitor stopped right alongside me.

Raising my chin inch by cautious inch, I scanned the ceiling.

Up against the plastic smoke alarm, a tiny crimson dot blinked back at me.

I spotted another hidden lens tucked into the empty space on my cheap bookshelf.

A third was perfectly disguised behind the greasy exhaust grate above the stove.

Over these agonizing eight years, my father had rarely spent an actual evening under this roof.

The only constant companions watching me sleep, eat dinner crumbs, and dodge angry loan sharks at the front door had been these microscopic lenses.

On the right-hand panel of my screen, My mother was carefully clasping a glittering diamond choker around Romy's neck.

My father was lingering right behind them, grinning smoothly straight into the lens.

"Don't worry," he told his paying audience effortlessly. "The minute this little trial concludes, we'll generously compensate Reeve for all her hardships."

I quickly screen-recorded the footage and saved it.

Dropping the volume to zero, I kept my head down, forcing myself to ignore the steady red blink of the cameras above.

Let them keep believing I was still their clueless, pathetic experiment.

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
