Introduction

He divorced me for a girl who reminded him of who I used to be.

For five years, I played the perfect wife.

I traded my motorcycle for a luxury car, my camera for boardroom meetings, and my freedom for the suffocating rules of his old-money world.

I changed everything about myself to make him happy.

But when he looked at me, all he saw was a cold, calculating socialite.

He told me he missed the girl who used to ride through the desert with him at 2 AM.

He forgot that he was the one who made me sell my bike.

I didn’t fight when he handed me the divorce papers.

I just asked for the car and the lake house, then quietly signed my name.

He thought I was being greedy.

He didn’t realize that when I walked out the door, I was also taking the copyrights to his company’s billion-dollar project and the shares I had been quietly buying for years.

He got the girl who looked like the old me.

But I walked away with everything.

Chapter 1

————

The divorce papers arrived on a Tuesday, while my husband was in the driveway teaching his girlfriend how to fix her VoltRider.

The lawyer slid the folder across the table. “Mr. Ashford wanted me to tell you the settlement is negotiable.”

I looked at the asset schedule. A downtown condo. Five million in cash.

Generous by ordinary standards. An insult by the standards of the world I had spent five years holding together for him.

I didn’t make a scene. I just signed.

“Do you need me to move out tonight?” I asked.

The lawyer blinked, clearly having braced for tears.

The front door opened. Grayson walked in, his expensive white shirt streaked with black grease, looking more relaxed than I had seen him in months. He saw my signature and stopped.

“You signed.”

“Maisy’s waiting outside,” I said. “You should go.”

He studied me, looking for anger, or maybe grief. I gave him neither. I pulled off my wedding ring and set it beside the papers. It caught on my knuckle, tearing a small strip of skin.

Grayson grabbed my hand. “What did you do?”

His thumb brushed the blood. For a second, he looked almost tender. I pulled away.

“Why aren’t you asking me anything?” he demanded, his voice suddenly sharp. “Why I’m doing this? What Maisy is to me?”

I finally looked up at him. “If I asked, would you stay?”

He went still.

Outside, a scooter horn blared. Maisy’s voice echoed through the garden. “Gray! Are we going or not? We’ll miss the sunrise!”

Grayson let go of my hand. The hesitation vanished from his face.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m tired. Maisy reminds me that a person doesn’t have to spend his whole life discussing business in the back of a luxury car.”

I followed his gaze out the window. Maisy was straddling her VoltRider, a ridiculous thing covered in neon stickers, her mist-blue hair blowing in the wind. She was twenty-three and completely unbothered. She looked exactly like I did at that age—before I learned to sit still, smile, and wear the right things in a room full of sharks.

Grayson was the one who made me sell my motorcycle in our first year of marriage. An Ashford wife doesn’t ride something cheap and dangerous, he had said. I spent five years learning to walk in heels, remembering the birthdays of shareholders’ wives, and sitting quietly in the back of the Aurelian Chancellor. Now he was leaving me for a girl who reminded him of the person I used to be.

I pushed the papers back toward him. “I understand.”

My calmness seemed to irritate him. He picked up a pen and wrote the lake house into the settlement.

“You can have the house, too.”

“Thank you.”

“What else do you want?” he asked, his voice tight.

I glanced at the car parked in the drive. “The Aurelian. Transfer it to me. You’ll be on the scooter from now on. You won’t need it.”

The tenderness in his face turned to disappointment. “I’m leaving you, and all you care about is a car?”

I didn’t explain. I simply let my eyes well up—just enough.

Of course I was sad. Love was gone. But the car was worth nearly two million dollars. That was real. Grayson didn’t know that from the day he made me sell my bike, I had started asking myself what would be left if he ever stopped loving me.

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?

I should've taken the damn bus.

But no, I had to walk through the park at midnight like an idiot. Now I've seen something I can't unsee—a massive black wolf tearing apart three men, then shifting into the hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on.

Kieran Vaughn. Wealthy lawyer, werewolf, and apparently, he thinks I'm his mate.

Here's the problem: I don't do relationships. I definitely don't do supernatural things. I absolutely don't do rich guys who think they can control my life just because their inner wolf has decided I smell like home.

When hunters start targeting me to get to him, Kieran drags me into his pristine penthouse for "protection." Now I'm living with a man who looks at me like I'm his last meal, whose touch sets my skin on fire, and who's barely holding onto his control.

He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.

And in his world? Love will get you killed.
