Introduction
Everyone at Thornfield thinks I'm nobody — an unranked transfer with no house, no pack, no future worth fighting for. That's the plan. Stay invisible. Find out who murdered my mother. Get out before anyone learns what bloodline actually runs in my veins.
Then Thane Ashgrave pins me to the ground with a corpse between us, and the mark on my wrist lights up like a brand.
He's the academy's golden enforcer, born to uphold the law that erased my family. Cassian Voss is the house heir I'm impersonating, and he knows it. Wolfe Drayce is the disgraced bastard everyone underestimates — except me, because I've seen what he does when he stops holding back.
Three men. One bond none of us asked for. A throne buried under this academy that was never actually empty — it was waiting for me.
I have thirty days to find my mother's killer before my cover breaks. I didn't plan on falling for the sons of the men who might have ordered her death.
I really didn't plan on needing all three of them to survive what's coming.
Chapter 1
The wolf came out of the tree line already mid-change, and I didn't have time to be surprised.
Bone cracked somewhere under fur that hadn't finished growing in — a wet, popping sound, like knuckles snapping in reverse — and then four hundred pounds of grey muscle hit the frost where I'd been standing half a second earlier.
I rolled instead of running. Running gets you chased. Rolling gets you a knife into your hand.
The blade cleared my boot before my shoulder finished hitting the ground. Old steel, worn smooth at the grip from a hand that wasn't mine anymore. I came up on one knee with it low and backward, the way Ren had drilled into me before I could reliably tie my own shoes — never show the edge until it's already in someone.
The wolf pivoted faster than something that size should. Yellow eyes, black muzzle, a scar bisecting one ear like it had been notched for counting. Not feral. Trained. Whoever sent him had sent something that knew how to hunt a person, not just chase one.
"Wrong girl," I said, mostly to keep my voice working. "You want the one who screams."
He came in low, going for the hamstring — smart, efficient, the kind of bite that ends a fight before it starts — and I let him get close enough to commit before I planted and drove sideways into the boundary stones at the property line. Granite doesn't move for four hundred pounds of anything. He hit it shoulder-first, and the whole night he flinched at the sound.
I was on his back before he finished the second, dazed breath. Knife under the jaw, up and in, both hands, all the weight I had.
It was over in four seconds. It felt longer, the way violence always does — stretched thin, every heartbeat with its own timestamp — and then it was just me, kneeling in blood going black in the moonlight, breathing like I'd swum here instead of fought.
My hands were shaking. That was fine. Shaking was allowed, after. Ren's rule, not mine: feel it once the thing is dead, never before.
I wiped the blade on my jeans and made myself look at him as he shifted back — not out of mercy, out of necessity. You don't leave a body you haven't identified. Young. Younger than me, maybe. And around his bare throat, half-buried in melting frost, a signet ring on a leather cord — dark metal, a raven caught in a crown of thorns.
I knew that crest. Every unranked wolf who'd ever had to learn which houses to fear on sight knew that crest.
I was still crouched there, ring cold in my closed fist, when the smell of them hit me — pine and gun oil and something underneath that made every hair on my arms lift before my brain caught up to why.
Three of them. Moving through the tree line the way people move when they've never once had to worry about being ambushed themselves.
"That's not procedure." The voice came first — flat, precise, already cataloguing. "That's an execution."
He stepped into the clearing like the moonlight had been waiting for him specifically. Tall, dark-haired, a face built for giving orders and having them obeyed on the first try. No hesitation in how he moved, none of the wariness that should come standard with finding a stranger kneeling over a corpse. He didn't look afraid of me. He looked inconvenienced.
"Ashgrave." The second one said it like a warning label, sliding out from the trees a beat behind, golden and grinning in a way that didn't reach anywhere near his eyes. "She's still holding the knife. Maybe lead with something other than a lecture."
"She's unranked." The first one — Ashgrave, apparently, which meant I already knew exactly whose territory I was kneeling in — hadn't looked away from me once. "No insignia, no collar tag, no registered scent on file. Which means either Thornfield has a very serious admissions problem, or —"
"Or she's the reason we've been tracking a rogue scent through the campus perimeter for three nights," the third one said.
He hadn't spoken until then. Didn't need to, probably — he took up enough space without it. Bigger than the other two, quieter in a way that read as more dangerous, not less, standing half a step outside their formation as he'd never fully agreed to be part of it. He looked at the body, then at the ring still closed in my fist, then at me, and something in his expression didn't match the other two's careful, assessing calm. It looked almost like recognition.
"I don't know what you think happened here," I said, and got my legs under me slowly, palms out, knife still in one hand because putting it down felt like the fastest way to end up as dead as the thing cooling in the frost. "But I found him like this."
"You're covered in his blood." Ashgrave's eyes flicked to my hands, my jeans, back to my face. Not accusing yet. Filing. "Kneeling over him with a knife that's seen use before tonight. And you expect to find him like this to hold up."
"I expect it to hold up exactly as well as you standing over an unranked girl in the dark, three-to-one, deciding what story you're going to tell about tonight before you've asked me a single real question."
The golden one laughed — short, surprised, delighted in a way that felt like it cost him something to allow. "She's got a mouth on her, Thane."
Thane. I filed the name away automatically, the way I filed everything, because knowing what to call the thing that might kill you had kept me alive longer than knowing what to call myself ever had.
Thane didn't laugh. He crossed the last of the distance between us in three strides. Before I'd fully processed that he intended to touch me at all, his hand closed around my wrist — not gently, not asking — twisting the knife loose and pinning my arm behind me in the same motion, close enough now that I could see he had a thin scar through one eyebrow and eyes the color of standing water.
The mark went off like a struck match.
Heat tore up my arm from the exact place his fingers closed around my wrist, sharp enough that I heard myself make a sound I didn't authorize, and for one suspended second neither of us moved at all — him with my arm still locked behind my back, me with my spine arched against him, both of us staring down at the place where his skin met mine like it had personally betrayed us.
"What," Thane said, very quietly, "was that?"
"I don't know." It was true. It was also, I understood immediately, never going to be believed.
The big one — the quiet one — had gone very still at the edge of the clearing, nostrils flaring like he was recalculating everything he thought he knew about tonight. The golden one had stopped smiling entirely.
"Thane." A new voice this time, low, warning. The quiet one, finally speaking. "Let her go."
"She's unmarked. Unranked. No file." Thane hadn't released my wrist. If anything his grip had tightened, like he needed the contact to keep proving to himself it had actually happened. "That doesn't happen by accident."
"No," the golden one agreed, quiet now too, watching me with an entirely different kind of attention than he'd started the night with. "It really doesn't."
Behind us, up the ridge, lights were coming on in the academy's east tower — someone had heard something, or smelled it, or simply woken up on schedule to a nightmare I hadn't finished having yet. I had thirty seconds, maybe less, before this stopped being three heirs and a body in the woods and became something with witnesses, paperwork, a headmaster, a name that wasn't supposed to exist anymore attached to a ring I still hadn't managed to hide.
"You have two choices," Thane said, and for the first time there was something under the flat control in his voice — not quite uncertainty, but close enough to it that I understood, with a cold drop in my stomach, that he didn't like not knowing things any more than I did. "Tell me who you are before Vale gets here and decides for you. Or don't, and find out what happens to unranked wolves who show up covered in blood with no explanation."
I closed my hand tighter around the ring in my fist, and lay with the only name I had left to spend.
"Vesper," I said. "Vesper Larke."
Thane's grip didn't loosen. But something in his face did — a fraction, a hairline crack in all that composure — like he'd just heard the first true thing out of my mouth all night, and hated how much he wanted to hear the rest.
Up the ridge, the tower bell started to ring.
