Introduction

At my ex-wife's century wedding engagement banquet, she pointed at my nose and humiliated me publicly: "A waste of space who lays bricks, get out!"
Her wealthy new lover pressed my face hard into broken glass and forcibly dragged away my desperately crying five-year-old daughter.
I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth, drew the "Ghost Mark," and dialed the Pentagon hotline that had been dormant for five years.
Three seconds later, twelve Black Hawk helicopters shattered the dome, and a special task force descended from the sky. A two-star general, amid the terrified gazes of the assembled elite, saluted me with a thunderous: "Ghost Commander, troops have arrived as ordered!"
My ex-wife, who had been so arrogant just moments ago, instantly collapsed to the ground.

Chapter 1

"Jack! Move faster! The foreman's rushing to settle accounts so he can go drink cold beer!" a co-worker below shouted up at me.

"Right away." I wiped away sweat mixed with cement dust and slammed the last eighty-pound scaffold steel pipe heavily into its slot.

I wiped my hands and climbed down the rusty ladder toward the cramped changing room.

Just as I was taking off my sweat-soaked gloves, my cheap secondhand phone on the bench vibrated once.

It was a real-time push notification from The Wall Street Journal, recording a wealthy family's engagement banquet, with accompanying photos taking up most of the screen.

In the photo, my ex-wife Sophia wore a diamond-studded gown, holding the arm of her wealthy fiancé, smiling radiantly. Our daughter Lily stood in front of a giant engagement cake, looking unhappy.

My thumb hovered over the cracked screen.

Seeing my daughter, my heart suddenly constricted, as if tightly strangled by iron wire, cutting into flesh.

Lily. My angel. My everything.

Three years ago, for the safety of my daughter and Sophia, I had to leave them and live under an assumed name as a worker.

Sophia came from a New York old money family. She had left everything to be with me back then. During our time together, I never let her suffer.

But after I left, living alone and raising our daughter broke her. She began to hate me and constantly told our daughter: "Your father is a coward. He abandoned us."

When I left her, she had just turned two, could barely walk, but would grab my camouflage uniform with her chubby little hands and say in her baby voice, "Daddy is a superhero who protects the world."

Tomorrow would be Lily's fifth birthday.

I took a deep breath of air and walked to my shabby metal locker in the far corner, pulling open the door.

Inside, besides a change of worn jeans, there was only a scratched military green metal toolbox.

I pressed the hidden latch at the bottom of the toolbox. With a "click," the heavy compartment popped open.

Even in the dim changing room, the contents of the compartment still radiated a suffocating sense of oppression.

It was a gold medal—the "Presidential Medal of Freedom," the highest honor the United States of America bestows upon civilians. Next to it lay an old-model military encrypted satellite phone.

Looking at these two items, my originally turbid, weary eyes instantly became ice cold.

Jack, the New York construction worker, was an ant that anyone could step on. But three years ago, in the Pentagon's highest-level classified archives, my name was S-level classified.

I reached out my rough hand, my fingertips lightly brushing over that cold medal, finally stopping on a photograph well-protected in plastic wrap. The little girl in the photo smiled as brightly as sunshine.

"Lily..." I murmured this name in a low voice, my Adam's apple rolling with difficulty.

I didn't care who Sophia remarried, nor did I care how many billions that Wall Street playboy William had. If Sophia wanted fame and fortune, and William could give it to her, that was enough.

But I had to see Lily once. Even if just from afar, to confirm she was happy and safe, then I would return to my gutter and continue being a nobody.

After college, Lucas pursued me relentlessly.

He was the CEO of the Blackwood Group — a man whose wealth and power eclipsed ninety-nine percent of the world.

He was gentle. Romantic. Attentive. I fell for him fast.

But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.

Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.

Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.

Do you really know your husband?

From that day on, my life filled with shadows.

I suspected my husband of having an affair.

When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.

I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.

My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."

The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"

I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.

But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.

Does Lucas truly love me?

And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

I found myself molded to Lex's will, my feet irresistibly following the dance steps.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
